Idaho Steelheads News Release

BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads managed a much-needed victory tonight over the Las Vegas Wranglers with a 3-2 win at the Bank of America Centre as the team hunts down a playoff spot. The 4,445 fans in attendance were treated to an exciting end, with Warren Peters scoring the game-winner, a power play goal, 1:16 into sudden-death overtime. The goal was Peters' third game-winner of the season.

Idaho's all-star goalie Frank Doyle improved his record to 23-12-2 stopping 20 of 22 shots, while Idaho hammered 46 shots at Las Vegas' Sebastien Centomo and Marc Magliarditti. Magliarditti picked up the loss in relief for the Wranglers and is now 11-15-3.

The first period ended without any scoring. Idaho dominated most of the play, outshooting Las Vegas 14-5. The Steelheads managed to stymie the Wranglers' top-ranked power play preventing Las Vegas from scoring on its one man-advantage. Likewise, the Wranglers stopped Idaho from tallying on its three power play opportunities.

Idaho didn't have the same energy in the second period as they had in the first, and Las Vegas began to take control. The Wranglers power play finally paid off when Chris Stanley beat Frank Doyle at 8:30. The goal seemed to wake up the Steelheads, and they answered back quickly. Matt Elich tallied on a pass from Scott Burt. The period ended tied at one apiece, and a heated skirmish between the two teams at the buzzer.

Idaho got a power play early in the third period, but the Wranglers killed it off. Despite that, Idaho took the lead on a beautiful sequence of passes. Billy Tibbetts, from the left circle fed across ice to the right circle, to a waiting Bobby Russell. Russell one-timed a pass to Lance Galbraith who was parked in front of the net and beat Centomo with his 9th of the season. At 6:30, Centomo was replaced with Marc Magliarditti. Las Vegas evened the game on the power play, when Mike McBain picked up the puck as Idaho tried to clear the zone, and scored his 2nd goal of the season. Idaho applied pressure in the last couple of minutes and had several shots on net. With just :03 remaining in the game, Las Vegas had a holding penalty called on them. The game went to overtime, and Idaho had a man-advantage. Idaho had outshot Las Vegas 44-21 in regulation play.

Idaho scored just 1:16 into the extra frame. Warren Peters had the puck to Magliarditti's left behind the goal line and lifted it off the goalie's back and into the net for the game-winner.
