Columbus Snaps Tribe Streak
August 28, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Second baseman Bernie Castro went 3-for-5 with a double, homer, two runs and three RBI as Columbus posted a 5-3 win over Indianapolis in front of 6,748 Tuesday night at Victory Field.
The Clippers improve to 62-75 overall and 29-38 on the road, while the Indians fall to 68-69 on the season and 37-31 at home. The Tribe dips below .500 for the first time since April 22, 2006, ending a streak of 281 consecutive in-season days at .500 or better.
Castro put Columbus on the board with his first roundtripper in 398 at-bats this season -- a two-run blast to left. The long ball came after CF Ryan Langerhans opened the contest with a base on balls.
Castro helped the Clippers add to their lead in the third. He hammered a double to right and came around to score on RF Abraham Nunez's two-bagger to left.
Indianapolis trimmed the deficit with runs in the fourth and sixth. 2B Yurendell de Caster crushed his ninth dinger of the year in the fourth and drilled an RBI single to plate CF Andrew McCutchen in the sixth.
Columbus responded with two runs in the seventh to open up another three-run advantage. LF Tyrell Godwin lined a single to right and scored on Castro's base knock to left, while Langerhans drew a walk and eventually crossed the dish on LF Kory Casto's sacrifice fly to center.
Clippers RHP Beltran Perez (5.1 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO) picked up the win in his Triple-A debut, while RHP Winston Abreu (1.1 IP) collected his fifth save of 2007.
RHP Dan Foli (1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) and RHP Edward Valdez (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 SO) worked the middle innings for Columbus and were both credited with holds.
Indians LHP Michael Tejera (6.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO) was pinned with the loss, falling to 8-5.
Castro was the only Columbus hitter to notch a multi-hit performance, while de Caster (2-for-4, 1 R, 2 RBI), LF Nyjer Morgan (2-for-5, 1 R) and RF Steven Pearce (2-for-4, 1 R) all had more than one base knock for the Tribe.
Indianapolis has been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, but still has a chance to register its third straight winning season.
The teams return to Victory Field on Wednesday at 7 p.m., for game four of the five-game series. RHP Collin Balester is slated to start for Columbus, while RHP Marty McLeary is expected to get the nod for Indianapolis.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.
Buy-One, Get-One-Free coupons are available for Wednesday's showdown at participating Kmart locations in Indianapolis, Brownsburg, Greenwood and Martinsville.
