Louisville Bats News Release
LOUISVILLE, KY-Louisville had an eight-run lead through four innings, but a valiant comeback by the visiting Toledo Mud Hens forced the Bats to hold on for a 9-8 victory on Tuesday night in front of 7,150 in attendance at Louisville Slugger Field.
The Bats wore pink jerseys that willbe auctioned off on the club's website at www.batsbaseball.com. All proceeds of the auction will benefit the Louisville Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Starting pitcher Matt Maloney (1-1) threw 10 strikeouts in five innings for Louisville, allowing four hits and four runs. The 10-strikeout performance was his fifth such game this season, and the first since being called up from Double-A Chattanooga last Tuesday.
Bats designated hitter Mark Bellhorn blasted a 441-foot home run to left field in the bottom of the fourth inning. The solo shot, which gave Louisville a 9-1 advantage, was the eventual game-winning run, and Bellhorn finished 2-for-3 on the evening.
Toledo managed to score seven unanswered runs, highlighted by a three-run Dane Sardinha home run in the fifth inning. Sardinha went 1-for-4 with a pair of runs, while shortstop Erick Almonte went 4-for-5 with two runs.
The Bats started the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when second baseman Luis Bolivar smacked a three-run home run over the left field wall. Bolivar went 2-for-3 on the evening, and drove in four runs.
Relief pitcher Marcus McBeth earned his 12th save of the season for the Bats after striking out three, including the final two Toledo hitters.
Toledo starter Anastacio Martinez (3-4) allowed eight runs off seven hits in 2.1 innings. He walked four Bats and struck out a pair. Reliever Jason Karnuth struck out three in his 3.0 innings of work.
The Bats and Mud Hens will head to Toledo for the second to last game of the series on Wednesday night. RHP Kirk Saarloos (0-2, 4.11) for Louisville and RHP Dennis Tankersley (10-7, 4.58) for Toledo are the probable starters for the 7:00 p.m. first pitch.
