Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Columbia, SC- June 9, 2016) - The West Virginia Power lost 11-2 to the Columbia Fireflies on Thursday night. The Fireflies scored three early and six late to take the first game of this four-game set at Spirit Communications Park.
The Fireflies took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against Power starter Gage Hinsz. South Atlantic League All-Star Vinny Siena singled to start the inning, stole second and scored on single from Kevin Kaczmarski. JC rodriguez doubled in Kaczmarski and scored on a sac fly for the early lead.
Chase Ingram held West Virginia scoreless through three innings. In the fourth, Logan Hill doubled home Ryan Nagle to cut the deficit to two at 3-1. The Power left the tying runs on the bases in the fourth and fifth innings.
In the sixth, the Fireflies added a pair off Hinsz. Rodriguez hit a solo home run off Julio Vivas and Columbia scored five time on five hits in the seventh to build an 11-1 lead.
West Virginia managed a run in the ninth on a pair of hits with Daniel Arribas driving in Ke'Bryan Hayes from second to close the offense. Arribas started the game at first base, but finished in center field due to an injury to outfielder Tito Polo. Logan Ratledge started the game in left, played center for six batters and was called in to pitch to close the inning, forcing Arribas to center. Tyler Filliben began the game at short and played the final inning in left, while Carlos Munoz and Alfredo Reyes were each brought in as defensive replacements in the eighth as well.
Hinsz (0-1) took the loss after allowing five runs on six hits over five and a third. Ingram (4-5) earned the win with a quality start, allowing one run on four hits over six innings.
West Virginia and Columbia continue their series Friday night at 7:05 P.M. at Spirit Communications Park.
