Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston RiverDogs and citizens of Charleston will come together on Sunday, June 12, at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in a "Day of Unity," an inaugural event designed to embrace the city's show of strength and harmony.
The RiverDogs will host South Atlantic League rival Asheville Tourists with the first pitch slated for 5:05 pm. Afterwards, there will be a free postgame concert, inspirational speakers, a live Art for Unity demonstration, along with the RiverDogs' special brand of culinary delights.
The postgame concert will feature local musicians Tommy Gielingh and Evan Lampkin as they debut their "Unity Bridge" anthem and video. Proceeds from album sales will benefit the new International African American Museum.
Also participating will be the Morris Brown AME Generation of Praise Choir and Mayor John Tecklenburg.
"This is going to be a day where we all come together as Charlestonians," said RiverDogs President and General Manager Dave Echols. "We have a lot of activities planned as part of our annual SC State tribute to honor the Negro Leagues, Larry Doby and the Charleston Illumination Project so our Day of Unity event will be very, very special."
During the Charleston-Asheville game, in which the RiverDogs will wear their popular "Holy City" pinstripe uniforms and caps, fans will have opportunities to donate to the Charleston Police Fund's Charleston Illumination Project by giving coins for change.
Community partners for the event with the RiverDogs are the Charleston Illumination Project, College of Charleston, Avery Research Center, Enough Pie, Gun Sense SC, Save More Kids, The Sophia Institute and YWCA. Support is also being provided by Awendaw Green, Chucktown Pain, Clemson University and Crown Media Studio.
Sunday is also another Kids Club Day where all Kid's Club members receive FREE admission. In association with Charleston County Parks & Recreation and Y102.5, Sunday features free parking and Lowcountry youth eat free, enjoy pregame catch on the field as well as a rock climbing wall.
