Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - Natanael Delgado's return from a brief stint on the disabled list couldn't have come at a better time. After the Shorebirds gave up a solo homer in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game at 1-1, Delgado opened the bottom of the tenth with a 325 foot homer that just snuck over the left field wall to open the homestand with a 2-1 win over Lakewood.
Delmarva's win kept them alive in the first half playoff race, but first place Hagerstown and second place Hickory both won one-run affairs on Thursday night, so the Shorebirds (33-25) remain four games back of the division lead with 11 games left in the first half.
For a while, it looked like Ryan Mountcastle's third inning RBI single would suffice. He delivered for the game's first run after Franklyn Kilome issued a pair of two out walks. Neither team had many good scoring chances all night long.
Christian Turnipseed came on for the eighth inning and he was a bit erratic. Still, he got out of the frame in order and came back out for the ninth in a 1-0 contest. Back on May 20th, Jan Hernandez hit a 2-run shot off Turnipseed to win in Lakewood in walk-off style. Even though Turnipseed had pitched against Lakewood (23-36) since that night, he might have felt some deja vu when Jiandido Tromp hit a game-tying solo shot over the left field fence on Thursday night.
But as he has done so many times this year, Turnipseed didn't let the inning spiral out of control and he sent the rest of the BlueClaws down quickly. When the Shorebirds didn't score in the bottom of the ninth, Delmarva was forced into extra innings for the third time in four nights.
In the bottom of the tenth, Delgado was very little time. He took a first pitch fastball off the plate from Luis Morales before blasting a line drive homer to the left field corner, giving Delmarva it's fourth walk-off win of the season.
The Shorebirds continue a four game series with Lakewood on Friday night at 7:05 pm. Delmarva sends Brian Gonzalez to the mound against Drew Anderson under the Friday night lights. Brendan Gulick will have the broadcast beginning with Shorebirds On-Deck at 6:50 pm on Fox Sports AM 960 and online at theshorebirds.com.
