Colorado Eagles Weekly Update
February 6, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Colorado Eagles News Release
LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles of the ECHL announced today that they've signed forward Joey Sides. Sides was a CHL All-Star last season, and recorded 98 points (44-54-98) and 219 penalty minutes during the past two seasons with the Arizona Sundogs, in which he was arguably the club's best player. In 25 games with the Friesland Flyers (Netherlands) this season, he's registered 45 points (18-27-45) and 80 PIMs.
"Joey's a player who we're familiar with from his time in Arizona, and he's a very welcome addition to our lineup" said Eagles Assistant Coach Greg Pankewicz. "He's not the biggest in stature, but he plays hard and brings a lot of things to the team. He's a good puck-pursuit guy who has good hands and can get under opposing players' skin, and he's also a guy who can play in any situation and excels on special teams."
In 16 career games against the Eagles, the 5-foot-11-inch, 185-pound Sides was a pain in the side, recording 14 points (8-6-14) -- eight of them on special teams. Prior to turning pro, the Sun Valley, Idaho native spent four seasons at Wentworth Institute of Technology (D-III), acting as the team's captain during his final two years.
Friday, February 3; Eagles Get Back on Track with 6-3 Win in Bakersfield
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Colorado Eagles snapped a franchise long-tying four game winless streak with a 6-3 victory over the Bakersfield Condors in the first of back-to-back meetings between the teams this weekend. Aaron Schneekloth scored twice for Colorado, including the game-winner, re-claiming his position as the ECHL's leading scorer among defensemen.
Saturday, February 4; Colorado Sweeps Weekend Set Against Condors
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Colorado Eagles defeated the Bakersfield Condors, 5-3, sweeping the weekend set between the teams. Kevin Ulanski 's four point night (1-3-4) helped lead the Eagles' offense, as each of the veteran forward's helpers came on the team's three third period goals. Kyle Jones picked up his second win in as many nights, giving him 19 victories on the season (second in the ECHL).
THE WEEK AHEAD
Friday, Feb. 10 & Saturday, Feb. 11; Eagles Look for Home Wins Against Stockton
Coming off a pair of wins in Bakersfield, the Eagles will look to keep the streak going when they host the Stockton Thunder for a pair of games this weekend. Colorado is in need of at least one win at home this weekend to prevent them from setting a new franchise record for consecutive losses at the Budweiser Events Center. So far in the season series against Stockton, the Eagles are 2-1-0, including 1-1-0 at home. All three of the meetings occurred during the first two weeks of the season.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
VETERAN LEADERSHIP - The Eagles' veterans led the charge in last weekend's sweep of the Condors. Kevin Ulanski & Riley Nelson tied for the team lead with five points, Aaron Schneekloth had four, and Steve Haddon had three. In all, they accounted for 17 of the team's 30 points overall (57%). They also accounted for both of the game-winning goals & both insurance goals.
NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK - Joey Sides (signed) & Ben Chiarot (assigned) are the two newest Eagles, and both had big impacts in last weekend's set of games in Bakersfield. Sides scored on his first shot as an Eagle in opening Friday night's scoring & led the team in plus/minus (+5) over the weekend. Chiarot scored a goal in each game and totaled four points (2-2-4).
CALM, COOL, COLLECTED...and QUIET - Head Coach Chris Stewart often speaks to Kyle Jones' calm demeanor as a positive influence on the Eagles, but he's also quietly been one of the ECHL's most reliable -- and successful -- goalies all season. Jones enters the week trailing only Joe Fallon in wins with 19, and ranking 4th in minutes played (1,806) & games played (32).
NAUGHTY NELLY - For all the statistics Riley Nelson has accumulated over his long, successful career as a pro hockey player, penalty minutes have never been one of the things he's tallied in droves. This season, however, Nelson is on pace to challenge his career high in PIMs. After receiving seven minutes worth of penalties over the weekend in Bakersfield, Colorado's captain now has 37 PIMs in 41 games. His career high is 61, accumulated in 64 games with the Eagles in 2005-06; he has eight full seasons with 38 PIMs or fewer.
STREAKLY SPEAKING - The Eagles are riding one streak they'd like to continue and another they'd like to end. For the first time in 2012, Colorado is coming off two consecutive wins after taking both contests last weekend in Bakersfield. Part of their struggles in January included a streak of three games (against Las Vegas) without a win at home. A fourth home game in a row without a "W" would tie the team's longest drought at the Budweiser Events Center ever.
MISSING PERSONS - The Eagles top three scorers in their season series against Stockton are currently on loan to AHL teams (Chad Costello (7), Jack Combs (6), and Jon Landry (4)). Ranking fourth is Aaron Slattengren (3), who's currently on IR. There are five Eagles who have registered a pair of points against the Thunder. Nobody else currently on the roster has recorded a single point against Stockton.
