Chinooks' Pitching Struggles Again in Wausau
June 1, 2023 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Lakeshore Chinooks News Release
The Chinooks (1-3) got out to an early lead but couldn't contain the Wausau offense and suffer their third straight loss after falling to the Woodchucks (3-1) 15-11 on Thursday night at Athletic Park.
Just as they did yesterday, Lakeshore jumped out to an early lead in the first, scoring three runs. Josh Overbeek brought in the game's first run with an RBI single, and both Sam Meidenbauer and Logan Gregorio followed with RBI singles as well to give the Chinooks a 3-0 lead.
That lead didn't last long for the Chinooks as the Woodchucks loaded the bases quickly on three straight walks in the bottom half of the first. However, they only managed to score one run after pitcher Tyler Gall got out of a jam with a big double play and baserunner interference.
The bottom of the second inning was when Wausau's offense took over the game. The Woodchucks walked in two runs and followed that with a two-RBI single by Jesse Donohoe to give the Woodchucks the 5-3 lead.
Wausau continued to pile on runs off of Lakeshore's mistakes as they scored on a double steal and a wild pitch to make it 7-3. They were not done as Matt Del Sol delivered an RBI single to cap off a seven-run inning for the Woodchucks to stretch the lead to 8-3.
Multiple times in this game, Lakeshore did not go down without a fight as they hit five singles in a row in the top of the third. Logan Gregorio started the scoring off with an RBI single and Luke Wroblewski continued his hot batting tonight with a two-RBI single to make a two-run game. The Chinooks added another run on an error to cut the deficit to one, 8-7.
The Woodchucks responded again in the bottom of the third off more Chinook pitching. The Chinooks pitchers had a tough time finding the strike zone today and Wausau made them pay every time. They scored five runs in the inning on a HBP, walk, 2 RBI single, and a fielder's choice to extend the lead to 13-7.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Woodchucks added two more on a fielder's choice and Jesse Donohoe's second home-run in as many nights to give Wausau a 15-7 lead.
Lakeshore started chipping away at the deficit in the ninth just as a two-out walk and another Luke Wroblewski RBI single made it 15-9. Sean Tillmon followed him with a two-RBI single to make things interesting at 15-11. However, the lead proved to be insurmountable as that was all the Chinooks would get.
The Chinooks outhit the Woodchucks 13-7, but the walks by Chinooks pitching was the story of this one as they finished with 11 total walks given up. Logan Gregorio led the way for the Chinooks, going 2-for-3 with two hits, two RBI's, and two walks. Josh Overbeek, Sam Meidenbauer, and Adam Cootway also had two hits in the game.
The Lakeshore Chinooks will head home to face the Madison Mallards tomorrow night for their home opener. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. CST.
