Lakeshore Chinooks News Release
Madison, Wis. - The Lakeshore Chinooks were not prepared to leave Warner Park without a battle.
They posted two runs in the opening frame yet faced an early-inning deficit in Game 2 of a doubleheader.
Despite suffering a shutout loss, 4-0, in Game 1, Lakeshore went on to score nine unanswered runs after Madison's first-inning offensive attack in route to an 11-5 win.
First baseman Brennen Bales started a two-run rally in the second to level the game at four runs apiece. The two-way junior of Houston Baptist singled to plate second baseman Mike Sears from second base and third baseman Stephen Hrustich continued the momentum on a sacrifice fly.
Chinooks right-handed starter Ben Riffe relinquished four runs in the first but settled in and retired 10 of the next 13 batters faced.
Center fielder Collin Mathews led off as the first hit batsman, bringing up Bales who launched a home run into left field to give Lakeshore (4-7) a 2-0 lead in the first.
Mallards center fielder Alex Iadisernia matched Bales, sending a two-run shot to right field.
Designated hitter Bryant Shellenbarger doubled to right field and left fielder Matt Scannell reached first base on a throwing error, as Madison (3-6) grabbed a 4-2 advantage.
After a silent third inning, the Chinooks regained control in the fourth. Shortstop Mack Timbrook and center fielder Collin Mathews were placed on first and second base, eventually scoring on the Mallards' fourth error of the contest.
Lakeshore regained the lead, 6-4, but continued to add insurance runs. Catcher Josh Glenn collected his second hit, a double to right field that scored designated hitter Nathan Aide, who also advanced on the same throwing error previously.
The seventh run scored by the Chinooks forced Mallards field manager Donnie Scott to signal for relief. Right-handed pitcher Jonathan Zacharias lifted reliever Joey Kalafut with one out in the fourth.
Zacharias, however, couldn't keep the Lakeshore lead from swelling further.
Bales planted an RBI double to right field, scoring Sears and advancing Mathews to third. Aide kept the line moving, also doubling as Bales then stood 90 feet from home as Lakeshore's 10th run.
Hrustich scored Bales as well as Aide and the Chinooks expanded their comfortable lead to 11-4.
Madison placed runners on the corners due to a balk and a throwing error on Hrustich, though reliever Jacob Henderson struck out Scannell to finish the fifth frame.
Logging his only hit, left fielder Connor Kimple singled to left field with one out in the sixth.
Sears grounded into a 6-4-3 double play, nonetheless.
The Mallards at last managed a run due to a fielding error at first base. Third baseman Zach Storbakken scored from second base. Iadesernia lined out to left field, as Lakeshore held Madison from causing any further damage.
Henderson earned the win while Kalafut was tacked with the loss.
The Chinooks return to Kapco Park to face the Rafters Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
