Chiefs Fall 4-2 Friday, Eliminated from Playoff Race

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs were eliminated from the playoff race with a 4-2 loss to the Clinton LumberKings on Friday night. The Chiefs fell to 29-38 in the second half and an even 67-67 overall heading into their final series of the year at Kane County.

After Kyle Helisek held the LumberKings scoreless through the first three innings, Clinton pushed across a run in the fourth. Marcus Littlewood led off with a double and moved to third on a Dario Pizzano single. He came around to score on groundout putting Clinton up 1-0 while Pizzano moved to second. Pizzano scored on a Gabby Guerrero base-knock, extending Clinton's lead to 2-0 before Helisek retired two straight to get out of the inning.

The Chiefs answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth. C.J. McElroy Jr. walked and with one out stole second. Jordan Walton doubled to right to drive in McElroy and came around to score on a Trevor Martin two-out single to tie the game at 2-2. Martin advanced second on a throwing error by Guerrero, but was stranded there as Ildemaro Vargas grounded out ending the inning.

The LumberKings grabbed the lead right back with an unearned run in the fifth inning following two Chiefs errors. With one out Brock Hebert reached on an error and moved to second on a wild pitch. With two outs Pizzano singled to center, and Hebert attempted to score from second. The throw from McElroy beat the runner, by Jonathan Keener misplayed the ball allowing Hebert to score, giving the LumberKings a 3-2 advantage.

After the Chiefs stranded a runner in scoring position in the seventh, the LumberKings added an insurance run in the ninth inning against Brady Adamek. With one out Zach Shank walked and moved to second on a groundout. Brock Hebert drove him in with a double to extend the LumberKings lead to 4-2. After back-to-back walks loaded the bases, Adamek wiggled out of the jam as Tyler Marlette grounded into a force out, ending the inning. The Chiefs failed to scrap together a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, falling 4-2 to the LumberKings.

Helisek (7-7) pitched career-high tying seven innings giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks while fanning five. Adamek tossed two innings giving up one run on two hits and three walks while striking out one.
