Clinton LumberKings News Release

Peoria, IL - The Clinton LumberKings dropped the series finale to the Peoria Chiefs in an 11-8 slugfest on Monday afternoon. Each team recorded 15 hits, but the Chiefs took the win to earn a series split.

Peoria took a first-inning lead on a disputed decision by the umpire crew. With the bases loaded, Patrick Wisdom lifted a fly ball to left field that caromed off the top of the wall. The ball bounced back onto the field, and play continued as Wisdom pulled into second base. After conferring with each other, the umpires then changed the ruling to a home run, giving Wisdom a grand slam to take a 4-0 lead.

By the third inning, the Chiefs' lead swelled to 9-2. Clinton chipped away at the Peoria advantage, but they never managed to get over the hump and tie the game. Janelfry Zorrilla belted a two-run shot in the fourth inning, his third home run of the season. The LumberKings scored twice in the fifth to cut the lead to 9-7.

In the eighth inning, the LumberKings got their best chance to overtake the Chiefs. With two runners aboard, Gaby Guerrero drove one deep to right field, but Ildemaro Vargas made a leaping catch at the wall to rob Guerrero of extra bases. The catch by Vargas saved two runs from scoring, maintaining the lead for Peoria.

Rusty Shellhorn suffered his first loss of the season, allowing nine runs (seven earned) on ten hits. Corey Baker picked up the win for Peoria, and Zach Petrick recorded his sixth save of the year.

Dario Pizzano continued his success at the plate. Pizzano went 4-for-5 with two doubles, giving him a team-high 14 doubles. Tim Lopes, Patrick Kivlehan, Gaby Guerrero and Taylor Ard each had multi-hit games on the day.

The LumberKings return home to Ashford University Field on Wednesday, as Clinton starts a three-game series with the Burlington Bees. The LumberKings send right-hander Matt Anderson (2-3, 5.25) to the mound against Burlington right-hander Pat Lowery (0-1, 2.45). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM CT.
