Glenn's Homeruns Burn Dragons
May 20, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
For the second straight game, the South Bend Silver Hawks had a batter go yard twice in the same game. Today, it was left fielder Alex Glenn, who homered in the second and eighth innings, driving in three runs and scoring thrice en route to a 9-1 victory over the Dayton Dragons Monday.
Starting pitcher Brandon Sinnery (1-2), who entered the game in the top ten in the Midwest League in ERA, threw six innings of one-run ball as South Bend (25-16) salvaged the last game of the series with Dayton (17-27). The Hawks used a four-run bottom of the second to jump out to an early lead that they never relinquished in front of over 5,500 fans on a School Day at the Cove.
Dayton, the Class-A Affiliate of the 1975 World Champion Cincinnati Reds, got on the board first by plating a run in the top of the second inning. Right fielder Jeff Gelalich lined a one-out double to left field. The very next batter, designated hitter Junior Arias, laced a triple to the center field wall that scored Gelalich. Arias was stranded at third when Sinnery struck out Dragons first baseman Robert Ramirez and got catcher Joe Hudson to ground out to third.
The Hawks struck back immediately with four runs in the bottom of the second. Left fielder Alex Glenn made certain that the Dragons lead would not last for long as he hit the third pitch of the inning over the right field wall to tie the game at 1-1. Dragons starting pitcher Ismael Guillon (1-5) retired the next two Hawks hitters before designated hitter Mike Lang beat out a slow roller to second for an infield hit. Center fielder Breland Almadova walked to put two men on for shortstop Kevin Medrano. Medrano lined a single to center that scored Lang and put the Hawks ahead 2-1. The Hawks extended their lead to 3-1 on an error by Dragons second baseman Joe Terry that allowed Almadova to score from third base. Right fielder Socrates Brito capped off the inning with a single to center field that plated Medrano and made the score 4-1 after two innings.
South Bend, the Class-A Affiliate of the National League West Division-leading Arizona Diamondbacks, stretched the lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Guillon, who entered the game leading the Midwest League in walks with 37 in just 28 2/3 innings, had his control desert him in the fifth. Glenn led off the inning with his second hit of the game, a fly ball single to center field. With two outs, Guillon walked back to back hitters to load the bases. This ended his day. Altogether he walked five in his 4 2/3 innings. Tony Amezuca entered the game for the Dragons and tried to get out of the bases loaded jam. Almadova foiled his efforts however as he dropped a two-run single into left-center, scoring both Glenn and first baseman Rudy Flores, making the score 6-1 in favor of the Silver Hawks.
The Hawks added three more runs off of the Dayton bullpen in the seventh and eighth innings. Third baseman Carter Bell came around to score on an Almadova single in the seventh inning. Glenn then hit his second homerun of the game in the eighth inning, this time off of Dayton reliever Jesus Adames. After catcher Roidany Aguila singled, Glenn turned on the first pitch he saw and smashed it over the right-center field wall for a two-run homer, scoring the final runs of the game.
The Silver Hawks head to Fort Wayne for a three-day, four-game series with the Fort Wayne Tin Caps, the Class-A Affiliate of the San Diego Padres, starting on Tuesday. The Hawks return to South Bend on Saturday night for a three-game series with the Lansing Lugnuts, the Class-A Affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. First pitch on Saturday night is 7:05pm and, as always, it's a Flat Screen Saturday. The Silver Hawks will be giving away a 39" flat screen TV every inning. In addition, make sure to arrive early as the first 500 fans 18 and older will receive a free Silver Hawks T-shirt.
