
Kernels top Cougars 8-7

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kernels topped Kane County 8-7 on Monday afternoon. Kane County led early by scoring three runs in both the second and fourth innings, but the Kernels came from behind to beat the Cougars for the series victory.
The first three hitters in Kane County's second inning reached and scored to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead. Wilson Contreras drove in a run with a RBI single. Bijan Rademacher's RBI sacrifice fly, and Oliver Zapata's RBI fielder's choice plated the other two runs.
The Kernels cut into the lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning, making the score 3-1. Cedar Rapids loaded the bases with no outs and pushed across one run when Travis Harrison scored on a double play hit off the bat of Michael Quesada.
The Kernels then tied the game 3-3 in the third inning. Byron Buxton homered to left field, his seventh of the season. Jorge Polanco's RBI sacrifice fly to right plated Candido Pimentel, who had singled and stole second base.
Kane County took a 6-3 lead in the fourth inning as nine batters came to the plate. Dan Vogelbach brought home two with a RBI single. Jeimer Candelario's RBI single gave the Cougars a three-run advantage.
Byron Buxton reached on an error, stole second base, and later scored on a RBI groundout by Niko Goodrum in the fifth inning to cut the Kane County lead to 6-4.
The Kernels took a 7-6 lead in the sixth inning on one swing of the bat. Niko Goodrum's bases-clearing, three-RBI triple down the right field line gave the Kernels their first lead of the game. The Kernels loaded the bases with three walks by Michael Quesada, Jeremias Pineda, and Pimentel.
Travis Harrison homered in the seventh inning to put Cedar Rapids up 8-6. It was Harrison's seventh of the season, tying him with Buxton for second on the team.
Candelario singled home Gioskar Amaya in the ninth inning, cutting the Kernels lead to 8-7.
Tim Atherton (3-2) went two scoreless innings, only one hit while striking out one for the win. Brett Lee started for the Kernels and went five innings, allowing six runs on eight hits while striking five and walking four. Steve Gruver pitched the final two innings for a save, allowing one run on two hits while striking out two.
Nathan Dorris (1-2) allowed three runs over 1.2 innings for the loss. Taylor Scott started for Kane County and went 5.1 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits. He struck out four and walked two. Stephen Perakslis pitched one scoreless inning for the Cougars.
