
Hawks Avoid Sweep, Beat Dragons 9-1

South Bend, Ind.- South Bend's Alex Glenn belted two home runs and starting pitcher Brandon Sinnery allowed just one run over six innings as the Silver Hawks defeated the Dayton Dragons 9-1 on Monday afternoon. The Dragons were denied in their efforts to record their first five-game series sweep in franchise history. Dayton won the first four games of the set that began on Friday and included a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
The Dragons took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Junior Arias tripled after a Jeff Gelalich double, but South Bend answered with four runs in their half of the second. Glenn's solo home run tied the game and the Silver Hawks scored three more after two were out in the inning. South Bend held a 4-1 lead until the fifth when they added two more runs to extend the margin to 6-1. The Silver Hawks tacked on one more in the seventh and two in the eighth on Glenn's second homer of the game to close out the scoring.
Dragons starting pitcher Ismael Guillon (1-5) suffered the loss. He worked four and two-thirds innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits with five walks and six strikeouts. Tony Amezcua replaced Guillon and worked two and one-third innings, allowing two hits and one unearned run with one walk and no strikeouts. Jesus Adames replaced Amezcua and tossed one inning, allowing two runs on two hits.
The Dragons fell to 17-27 with the loss while South Bend improved to 25-16.
The Dragons collected eight hits. Arias was 3 for 4 with a triple and an RBI. Gelalich went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored. Seth Mejias-Brean was 0 for 4 as his nine-game hitting streak came to an end.
The Dragons do not play on Tuesday. They return to action on Wednesday at Fifth Third Field in Dayton at 7:00 p.m. Pedro Diaz (0-4, 7.29) will start for Dayton against West Michigan's Edgar De La Rosa (2-0, 5.68).
