Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL- Spurred by a first-inning grand slam by Patrick Wisdom, the Peoria Chiefs scored nine runs in the first three innings on their way to an 11-8 victory over the Clinton LumberKings Monday afternoon. The win bumped the Chiefs record to 21-21 after splitting a four-game series with Clinton. After Joe Cuda tossed a scoreless top half of the first inning, the Chiefs jumped on top in a big way in the bottom of the frame against Rusty Shellhorn. Breyvic Valera led off with a walk, while Jacob Wilson and Jordan Walton both singled to load the bases. Patrick Wisdom hit a grand slam that barely cleared the left field wall, plating all three of his teammates and putting the Chiefs up 4-0.
Peoria padded their lead with a run in the second inning. Valera once again opened the frame by reaching base, this time on a double to right field. Wilson singled to center to score Valera, adding to his team leading 35 RBI and putting the Chiefs up 5-0.
The LumberKings came back with two runs in the third inning after loading the bases with one out. Cuda walked Guillermo Pimental scoring Taylor Ard, and Patrick Kivlehan drove in Dario Pizzano on a single to center, cutting the Chiefs lead to 5-2. With the bases loaded against reliever Joe Scanio, Marcus Littlewood grounded into a double play ending the LumberKings threat.
The Chiefs answered in the bottom of the stanza with four more runs. With Wisdom on second and Casey Rasmus on first, Charlie Tilson doubled to right field to score Wisdom. Tilson grabbed his hamstring while running to second and had to be replaced by pinch runner Alex Mejia. Nick Martini doubled as well, platting Rasmus and Mejia. Two batters later Vargas smacked a single to right field to score Martini and put the Chiefs up 9-2 after the third inning.
Clinton nearly cut the lead in half with three runs in the fourth inning. After Guerrero led off with a single, Janelfry Zorrilla homered to left field to score two. Brock Hebert was hit by a pitch, and came around to score on a Pizzano double making the score 9-5 after the fourth. The LumberKings added to their total with two more runs in the next inning. Guerrero doubled to score Littlewood and advanced to third on a Mejia throwing error. Zorrilla pushed across Guerrero on a ground out to Mejia, making the score 9-7.
The Chiefs got one run back in the fifth inning. With two outs Ildemaro Vargas homered to left field, his first of the year, making the score 10-7. For the third straight inning, the LumberKings put a run on the board in the sixth. Pizzano led off with a double, and moved to third on an Pimental infield single. Kivlehan singled home Pizzano, cutting the Chiefs lead to 10-8.
The Chiefs got an insurance run in the eighth. With Vargas and Wisdom at the corners, Rasmus hit a two-out single to score Vargas and extend the Chiefs lead to 11-8. Despite the LumberKings putting runners in scoring position in both the eighth and ninth innings, the Chiefs didn't allow a run in the final three frames and won 11-8.
Cuda pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing nine runs (seven earned) on four hits and one strikeout. Scanio tossed 2 1/3 innings giving up five runs on six hits and one walk. Corey Baker (1-1) earned the win allowing one run on four hits and one walk in 2 1/3 innings.
