DAVENPORT, IA - Chad Lewis pushed across the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning with a two-out single and the Beloit Snappers held the Quad Cities River Bandits to one hit in a 4-1 win in Midwest League action at Modern Woodman Park on Monday afternoon.
The victory completes the Snappers first sweep of a four-game road series since 2008 and they now have a record of 25-18 and a two-game lead in the Western Division wild card spot. Quad Cities loses their fourth in a row to slip to 23-20.
The top of the eighth began innocently enough, with two outs sandwiched around a Renato Nunez (1-3, 2 RBI, run) walk, but a John Wooten single then moved Nunez to third. That set the stage for Lewis, facing Mitchell Lambson (1-2), to break the tie. Beloit bought insurance in the ninth, thanks to a two-run single by Nunez. Brent Powers (2-0) fired hitless ball in the seventh and eighth and was credited with the victory. Ryan Dull fulfilled the closer's role in the ninth with a scoreless inning, including a pair of strikeouts, to wrap up his sixth save.
River Bandits' outfielder Teoscar Hernandez (1-4, run) led-off the bottom of the first with a single, which led to an unearned run, as he stole second, took third on a groudout and scored on a Rio Ruiz sacrifice fly. That would be Quad Cities' only safety of the day. Beloit starter Raul Alcantara rebounded from that blemish by retiring 15 of 16 from the second inning on, with only an error allowing a man to reach. In six innings, he didn't walk a batter and struck out six to go with his six inning, one-hitter. This was the third time this season Alcantara completed a start allowing only one hit.
For the first five innings, the Snappers were held hitless by Mike Hauschild, who struck out five while walking two. They managed to plate a run in the sixth when Bruce Maxwell grounded out with the bases loaded, tying the game at 1-1. Lewis broke that tie two innings later and set Beloit up to complete the sweep.
The Snappers will take Tuesday off as they prepare to play the Cedar Rapids Kernels in a three game series. That series will begin with a Wednesday evening ballgame at 6:30pm. Beloit will throw RHP Michael Ynoa (0-1, 1.44 ERA) in the opener against RHP Mason Melotakis (3-1, 3.09 ERA). In anticipation of Wednesday's game, fans can visit the Snappers Facebook page and Twitter account to vote on special offers that will be available on Social Media Wednesday. Pohlman Field will also be the site of Cheers Night, as the organization will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the series finale of this famous show.
