Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte Checkers begin play in the 2006 Kelly Cup Playoffs tonight against the South Carolina Stingrays in North Charleston, S.C. at 7:05 pm. The Checkers will face the Stingrays in a best-of-three series. The Checkers will be at home tomorrow night at 7:00 pm. If Game Three is necessary, it will be played in North Charleston on Wednesday at 7:05 pm.
Charlotte owns a 9-2-0 record against South Carolina this season and this will be the third post-season meeting between the two teams. The last time the teams met in the playoffs was in 1997 when the Stingrays beat the Checkers in three games in the first round. The previous year, the Checkers defeated the Stingrays in three games in the second round and went on to win the Riley Cup.
LAST WEEK
1-1-0, 2 pts
Friday, April 7, 2006 at Columbia, W, 4-1 The Charlotte Checkers won their second straight contest and third game in their last four tries in a 4-1 victory over the Columbia Inferno Friday night in Columbia, South Carolina. The win allowed the Checkers to officially clinch fifth place in the ECHL's Southern Division, setting up an opening round playoff match up against the South Carolina Stingrays.
Kris MacPhee scored a pair of goals for the Checkers while goalie Jeff Glass won his fourth straight with 32 saves. Juris Stals and Nathan Gillies scored the other Charlotte goals, with Marc Andre Bernier tallying the lone Inferno goal.
Saturday, April 8, 2006 at Greenville, L, 2-3 The Charlotte Checkers dropped their final regular-season game to the Greenville Grrrowl 3-2 Saturday at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville, South Carolina. The game had little meaning to either team as the ECHL's playoff matchups were already set.
The Grrrowl got goals from Brock Radunske, Brad Bonello and Adam Nightingale, with Greenville goalie Cam Ellsworth notching the victory with 33 saves.
The Checkers got a solid effort in goal from backup Trevor Cunning, who hadn't seen action since March 10. Cunning made several spectacular saves on numerous quality chances by the Grrrowl, finishing with 29 stops. Daniel Sparre and Rick Kozak had the Checkers goals.
