Alaska's Leavitt Is First Rookie Since 1989-90 To Lead ECHL In Scoring

PRINCETON, N.J. - For the first time in 15 seasons and only the third time in history, a rookie has finished as the scoring leader in the ECHL as Alaska center Alex Leavitt finished atop the league with 91 points in 72 games.

Daryl Harpe of Erie had 122 points (38g-84a) in 60 games as a rookie to lead the ECHL in its inaugural season in 1988-89 and Bill McDougall of Erie had 148 points (80g-68a) in 57 games as a rookie in 1989-90.

Leavitt also led the league with 65 assists and becomes the second Aces player in a row to lead the league in assists and points. Playing in his hometown of Anchorage during the National Hockey League lockout, Scott Gomez led the ECHL with 86 points and 73 assists in 61 games in 2004-05.

Mike Scott of Alaska finished second with 87 points (37g-50a) in 72 games while D'Arcy McConvey of Idaho was third with 86 points (39g-47a) in 58 games. Ryan Kinasewich of Utah is fourth with 85 points (39g-46a) and Jeff Campbell of Gwinnett is fifth with 83 points (30g-53a) in 62 games.

Named ECHL Rookie of the Year while also being named to both the All-ECHL First Team and the ECHL All-Rookie Team, the 22-year-old had 26 multiple-point games, including 19 multiple-assist and four multiple-goal games. He had a career-high four assists and a career-best five points in a 6-3 win against Stockton on Jan. 21. Among league rookies, he was first in assists (65), points (91), power-play assists (34) and power-play points (45) and was second in plus-minus rating (+28). He was voted by National Conference coaches to play in the ECHL All-Star Game and scored a goal to help the National Conference to a 7-6 win.
