Charlotte Checkers News Release

Charlotte, N.C. - The Checkers came off a long six game road trip to the delight of their fans and the team wouldn't let the home crowd down as they defeated the Elmira Jackals by a score of 4-2.

In the first period, Checkers forward Matthew Ford continued his point streak as he struck for his tenth goal in as many games. Charlotte forward Peter Tsimikalis wristed a shot on Elmira netminder David Shantz that was stopped but Ford, standing on the doorstep, blasted home the rebound at 3:51 putting Charlotte up, 1-0. Later, the Jackals would find themselves on the power play and it was Elmira forward Paul Mcllveen that slammed home a rebound past a sprawling Checkers goalie Maxime Daigneault at 15:17.

The Checkers retrieved their one goal lead in the second period on a two-man advantage when Michel Leveille shot a one-timer past Shantz at 6:59 giving the Checkers a 2-1 lead. Charlotte struck for another goal and this time it was rookie Ryan Hillier sneaking a shot through a screen that fooled Shantz between the legs putting the Checkers up 3-1 at 9:35. The Jackals slashed the Checkers lead in half scoring on a two-on-one break after defenseman Craig Switzer sent a nice pass to forward Steve Yetman who flipped a shot that beat Daigneault at 18:20.

In the final period, the Checkers received another goal from Hillier as he shot the puck between the legs of Shantz as he was falling to the ice. This was the final tally of the game and more than enough for Charlotte as the team won by a score of 4-2.
