CHARLOTTE, NC – The Charlotte Checkers raised over $28,000 in one weekend for Junior Achievement, Ace & TJ's Grin Kids, and Checkmate Charities.

On Saturday, March 19, the Checkers took the ice wearing jerseys designed by Junior Achievement. The post-game jersey auction raised $11,275 for Junior Achievement.

"We are thoroughly impressed with how much the Checkers are willing to give back to the community," said Junior Achievement's Vice President of Development, Joe Burke. "As a professional sports organization, they really get community involvement." The funds will go to support the children in Junior Achievement programs which provide hands-on experience to teach kids the economics of life.

"We're really grateful for the opportunity to partner with both the Checkers and SunCom," said Phil Volponi, President and CEO of Junior Achievement. "Thanks to their participation, we were enormously successful in raising support for our area children."

SunCom Wireless generously underwrote the cost of the jerseys allowing the full amount raised to go to Junior Achievement. SunCom also provided prize packs to accompany each jersey which included either Checkers tickets, Apple mini iPods, Fireflies, or Danger Hiptop 2's. The combination of beneficiaries, corporate support, and incentives made this one of the most unique auctions in Checkers history.

On Monday, March 21, the Checkers and LastMinuteGolfer.com presented the 3rd annual Checkers Golf Tournament at Raintree Country Club. With a twenty percent increase in attendance over last year, the event raised over $17,000 with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Checkmate Charities and Ace & TJ's Grin Kids.
