San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Gulls have released goaltender Mathieu Chouinard, head coach Martin St. Amour announced Wednesday. Eddy Ferhi and newcomer Simon Lajeunesse are now slated to be San Diego's new duo between the pipes.

Chouinard, 24, appeared in 27 games this season for the Gulls, posting an 11-9-3 record with a 3.01 goals-against average, one shutout and a .906 save percentage. He also played in three games for the American Hockey League's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks this season, going 1-1-0 with a 1.57 GAA, one shutout and a .947 save percentage.

The 6-foot-1-inch, 211-pound netminder signed with San Diego last summer after spending the majority of last season with the AHL's Manchester Monarchs. Chouinard was 10-6-0 with a 2.25 GAA, .913 save percentage and four shutouts in 22 games for Manchester. He also played three games for the ECHL's Reading Royals and appeared in one game for the NHL's Los Angeles Kings last season.

Chouinard was originally drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. He re-entered the draft in 2000 and was Ottawa's second round pick. Chouinard is 65-38-6 in his professional career with a 2.51 GAA and .908 save percentage.

With Chouinard's departure, the goaltending work now belongs to Ferhi and Lajeunesse. Ferhi is 11-10-1 this season for the Gulls with a 2.83 GAA, one shutout and .915 save percentage.

Lajeunesse was acquired Tuesday from the Dayton Bombers, completing an earlier three-team trade which saw the Gulls also acquire Grady Moore from Dayton and send Trevor Koenig and Colin Shields to the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies.

The new San Diego netminder has also played with the Fresno Falcons and Gwinnett Gladiators this season before his stint with the Bombers. In 22 games combined with Fresno, Gwinnett and Dayton, the 6-foot, 180-pounder from Quebec City, Quebec posted a 5-12-2 record with a 3.20 GAA and .896 save percentage. Lajeunesse was a second round selection of Ottawa in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft and appeared in one game for the Senators in 2001-02.

The Gulls close out their five-game homestand Friday against the Long Beach Ice Dogs, with game-time set for 7:05 p.m. The first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive a Gulls visor. San Diego will play in Long Beach Saturday at 7 p.m. before hosting the Gwinnett Gladiators Sunday, March 27 at 5:05 p.m. The first 5,000 kids 14 and under at Sunday's game will receive a special Gulls T-shirt.
