Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Pensacola, FL – The Victoria Salmon Kings continued their lonely wander through the Gulf States making their fifth of eight stops in Pensacola. The Ice Pilots were first in the ECHL with 91 points to begin the night, and were one of only two teams to have already locked up a berth in the post season.

The story is not the same for the Salmon Kings though who have struggled in their first year in the league, and from the drop of the puck on Tuesday, the Ice Pilots looked as if they had been staring at the standings too long.

Victoria took a steady attack to Pensacola which seemed to have them stunned with shock and awe. That is not to say by the end of the period the Ice Pilots had not tested goaltender Jamie McCaig, but the teams skated to the intermission deadlocked at nothings.

Just 2:30 into the second period Tomas Micka recorded his first point as a Salmon King setting up Mark Smith's third goal of the season, beating Frederic Cloutier glove side with a snap shot from the slot.

With the two teams returning to the ice for the third and the Salmon Kings still holding the one goal lead, the only question was whether they could either score some more, or play 20 minutes of error free defensive hockey.

Well the first seven were picture perfect until the puck slid out to the point and blasted one time by Jason Beckett past McCaig to tie the game at one. Then at 10:48 on the powerplay, Corey Nelison and Cory Stillman set up Jordan Krestanovich to put the Ice Pilots up by one.

Pensacola then put the Salmon Kings away. Cory Stillman recorded his second assist of the game setting up Alex Materukhin in the slot. Materukhin beat McCaig to put the Ice Pilots up by two.

Pensacola held on to the to the 3-1 win, to extend their league lead with 93 points.

The Salmon Kings continue the road show in Mississippi on Wednesday, game time is 7:00 pm local time.
