Charlotte Checkers News Release
Fort Myers, FL. - The Charlotte Checkers went into the final period against the Florida Everblades down by one but struck five times to win by a score of 5-1.
After a scoreless first period, the Everblades struck for the first goal of the contest. Everblades forward Colin Nicholson's wrap around bid was stopped by Checkers netminder Jeff Jakaitis but the rebound went right to teammate Andrew Sweetland who blasted it home at 8:18 putting Florida up 1-0 after forty minutes of play.
The Checkers exploded offensively during the final period of play. Checkers forward Mattew Ford got the scoring started when he roofed a shot over the glove side of Florida netminder Anton Khudobin at 2:25 tying the contest at 1-1. Checkers forward P.J. Corsi scored his first goal of the contest when linemate David Rutherford caused a turnover behind the Florida net. The puck came free to Corsi who made no mistake banging it home at 6:07 putting Charlotte up, 2-1. Corsi and Rutherford would team up for the next Checkers goal as Rutherford was stopped on a 2-on-1 rush but the rebound went to Corsi who fired it past a sprawling Khudobin at 8:17. Later, Rutherford registered his first goal and third point of the night when his wrap around attempt fooled the Florida goalie at 10:54. Checkers centerman Michel Leveille would pot in a late power-play goal giving the Checkers a 5-1 victory on the road.
