Nailers Win 6-1 Over Cyclones

WHEELING, West Virginia - A three goal first period explosion was enough for the Wheeling Nailers in a 6-1 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones on New Year's Eve. Wheeling took sole possession of the North Division lead with the triumph.

For the eleventh time this season, the Cyclones surrendered three goals in a period-as Wheeling built a 3-1 edge. Kelly Miller collected his 15th goal just 15 seconds into the contest. Next, Mitch Ganzak teed up a puck in the slot to net his fourth goal of the campaign at 10:26 to give Wheeling a 2-0 lead. The Cyclones cut the deficit at 15:03, when Michael Cohen netted his seventh goal on a breakaway from Ben McLeod and Ben Gordon. Just 21 seconds later, Bryan Ewing scored his 14th of the year. Cincinnati outshot the Nailers, 12-7, in the period.

In the second period, Jon Grecu scored both goals for Wheeling, his third anf fourth of the season. The first came at 14:21 and the later was at 18:15. The shots in the period were even at seven.

Ewing's second score of the night and 15th of the season came 4:31 into the third stanza. Wheeling led the shots battle in the final frame, 8-5. For the game, Cincinnati outshot the Nailers, 24-22.

The Cyclones are now 14-13-5 on the season, while Wheeling is 20-5-5. Cincinnati is next in action at Johnstown on Friday for a 7:05pm showdown. That game will be carried on MAX-FM (97.7 and 99.5), as well as the club's website: www.cycloneshockey.com.

NOTES: Prior to the game, Cyclones forward Olivier Latendresse was named a starter for the American Conference at the upcoming ECHL All-Star Game...Rookie forward Ryan Toomey has quit the team to play in Finland...Rookie defenseman Frederic St. Denis has been recalled by Hamilton (AHL).
