December 31, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, N.J. (December 31, 2008) -- The ECHL announced today that Trenton Devils defenseman Matt Cohen has been selected to the ECHL All-Star Game which will take place in Reading, PA on January 21, 2009.
A native of New York City, Cohen is in his second full season with the Trenton Devils. Cohen is second among Devils defensemen with 14 points (3g, 11 a) in 20 games.
The 23-year-old Cohen played collegiately at Yale University, where he lettered for four seasons and tallied 18 points (7g, 11a) in 118 games for the Bulldogs. He served as the team captain in his senior year.
After finishing his career at Yale in 2007, Cohen signed a professional contract with Trenton. He played in nine games at the end of the season and had 8 penalty minutes.
Cohen was one of three Trenton Devils to play in all 72 games of the 2007-08 season, as he totaled 22 points (5g, 17a) in his first full season of professional hockey. Cohen was rewarded with a promotion to the Lowell Devils of the American Hockey League at the conclusion of the season and saw action in three games.
The Reading Royals, the City of Reading and the Sovereign Center will host the 17th Annual ECHL All-Star Game on Jan. 21, 2009 and the 12th Annual All-Star Skills Competition on Jan. 20, 2009.
There have been 46 players from the All-Star Game who have gone on to play in the National Hockey League, including 29 since 2002 when the lineups began to include players who coaches felt were prospects to move up to a higher level.
The starting lineups are determined in voting by American Conference coaches, team captains, media directors, broadcasters and media members. Coaches also submitted the top prospects from within their conference to determine the final roster, with each of the 12 teams having a representative.
The Devils return to the ice on Friday, January 2, for the first of back-to-back home games against the Dayton Bombers at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available on the Devils' official website at www.trentondevils.com.
