Chiefs Comeback Falls Short in OT

Johnstown Chiefs News Release

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs wrapped up 2008 with a valiant comeback attempt that fell just short as they lost 5-4 to the Trenton Devils on Wednesday night.

After a scoreless first period, the Chiefs found themselves nearly buried beneath a four-goal deficit three quarters of the way through the second period.

Brad Snetsinger opened the scoring 53 seconds into the middle frame followed by Jeff Prough beating Kris Mayotte at 9:07. Goals by Matt Cohen on the power play (15:43) and Jeff Prough at even strength (15:59) turned a two goal hill into a four goal mountain.

Johnstown started the climb, though, with a power play goal from Ryan Del Monte, his sixth of the season, at 17:44. Del Monte set up another specials teams goal, this time a shorthanded tally by Trevor Hendrikx that beat former Chief Gerald Coleman with 14 seconds left in the period.

The Chiefs took some time to get the offense clicking again after the second intermission, but once it got on track Trenton was in trouble. Jarrett Konkle's 17th of the season came shorthanded at 16:19 to get the Chiefs back within one, and then Del Monte's second of the game with 1:58 left force overtime. David Leaderer ended the Chiefs' chance at two points, though, with a wrister from 40 feet away with 15 seconds left in the extra frame.

Mayotte, who was named an American Conference All-Star starter earlier today, got saddled with his second overtime loss of the season while making 43 saves. The Johnstown power play finished the game 1-for-4.
