Charlotte Checkers News Release

Charlotte, North Carolina – Friday, January 2) The Charlotte Checkers nearly dug themselves out of a deep hole, but finally succumbed to the Trenton Titans Friday night at Cricket Arena. After trailing 3-0 in the third period, Charlotte suddenly caught fire on two goals by Allan Egeland but could not equalize before yielding two, shorthanded, empty-net goals in the final 1:04 for the final 5-2 final. P.J. Martin scored twice for the Titans, who also got goals from J.C. Smith, B.J Abel and Joe Rybar. The loss snapped the Checkers two-game home winning streak, and four game home unbeaten streak. David St, Germain took the loss in goal for the Checkers with 21 saves, while Trenton goalie Alex Westlund made 25 saves in earning his second victory of the season.

"When we look at the tape of tonight's game, sure we'll be disappointed in some things," remarked Checkers Head Coach Don MacAdam. "We're still 10-3-1 in the last 14 games and I think any team in the league would be happy with those numbers. We're not going to be perfect all season and sure we're disappointed tonight's loss, but looking at the big picture we're happy with where we are."

The Checkers fell behind 1-0 with 3:13 left in the first period as P.J. Martin knocked in a loose puck by St. Germain in a scramble in front. The Titans took their 1-0 lead to the locker room after one period. In the second period Martin made it 2-0 Titans with his second goal of the game at 1:42. Charlotte had three power play attempts in the period but could muster only nine shots and no goals.

Trenton increased its lead to 3-0 when 6'6" J.C. Smith took a feed in the high slot from behind the net, and buried the shot by St. Germain at 2:18 of the third period. The Checkers finally got on the board with 9:14 left in the game as Allan Egeland scored from hard work in front of the net to cut the Trenton lead to 3-1. The Checkers got within one at 3-2 with 6:49 to play as Egeland scored his second of the game, encouraging the Checkers that another comeback victory was in the air.

After a late penalty by the Titans, the Checkers pulled goalie David St. Germain to gain a two-man advantage in an attempt to get the tying goal. However, a length-of-the-ice shot by Abel found its way into the Checkers empty net for a 4-2 Trenton lead. One final Titans, shorthanded, empty-net goal by Rybar with 28 seconds left in the game sealed the Trenton 5-2 win.

The Checkers record dropped to 15-12-4 for 34 points with the Titans improving to 13-12-2 for 28 points. The Checkers closed out their four-game homestand going 2-1-1, and will continue their busy five-game week with two on the road this weekend, beginning Saturday night in Augusta at 7:30 p.m.
