
Former Nailer Verot Becomes 234th ECHL Player In NHL

PRINCETON, N.J. â Former Wheeling center Darcy Verot became the 234th ECHL
player to advance to the National Hockey League when he made his debut with
Washington on Thursday, playing three shifts in the Capitals 2-2 tie with
New Jersey.
Prior to being recalled by Washington, the 27-year-old Verot had eight
points (3g-5a) and a team-leading 89 penalty minutes in 28 games with
Portland of the American Hockey League.
Signed as a free agent by the Capitals on August 21, 2003, Verot scored 19
points (7g-12a) and had 240 penalty minutes in 44 regular season games with
Wheeling in 1999-2000 while also scoring 10 points (5g-5a) and accumulating
96 penalty minutes in 23 regular season games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of
the AHL. The 6-0 and 190-pound Verot scored 25 points (10g-15a) and had 347
penalty minutes in 78 regular season games and scored five points (2g-3a)
and had 40 penalty minutes in 21 playoff games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton
in 2000-01. He returned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in 2001-02 and scored 16
points (6g-10a) and had 387 penalty minutes in 71 regular season games. In
2002-03, Verot scored 16 points (5g-11a) and had 299 penalty minutes in 73
games with Saint-John of the AHL.
There have been 20 players in 2003-04 that have made their first NHL
appearance since playing in the ECHL. Verot becomes the 19th ECHL player to
make his NHL debut in 2003-04 joining Johnathan Aitken (Chicago on November
26), Ryan Barnes (Detroit on December 15), Darryl Bootland (Detroit on
November 8), Garrett Burnett (Anaheim on October 8), Andrew Hutchinson
(Nashville on October 18), Boyd Kane (Philadelphia on October 16), Patrick
Leahy (Boston on December 6), Steve McLaren (St. Louis on December 16),
Jason MacDonald ( New York Rangers on December 12), Pat Rissmiller (San
Jose on November 13), Nathan Robinson (Detroit on November 28), Michael
Ryder (Montreal on October 9), Dany Sabourin (Calgary on October 29), Rob
Skrlac (New Jersey on December 13), Rastislav Stana (Washington on November
14), Mike Stuart (St. Louis on October 24) and Jeremy Yablonski (St. Louis
on December 30). Travis Brigley, who played for Macon of the ECHL in
2001-02, played for Colorado on October 26.
