Everblades Stung 6-1 in New Year
January 2, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (18-10-5) could not start the New Year the way they ended 2003. Florida was upended 6-1 by the South Carolina Stingrays (18-11-1) before a crowd of 6,180 at TECO Arena.
After leading 1-0 after one on an Ed Courtenay power play goal, the Stingrays put the game away in the second period scoring three goals in just over a five minute span. Jeff Boulanger got things started over a minute in when his shot was able to trickle by Florida goalie Jeff Maund. Four minutes later the Stingrays were up 3-0 when Kevin Spiewak buried his rebound off a breakaway attempt. Courtenay would score his second goal of the game just over a minute later and the Rays were in command 4-0. Florida would dent the scoreboard before the period ended when, on the power play, Jay Legault found a streaking Reggie Berg going to the net and Berg tapped it past South Carolina net minder Kirk Daupenspeck for his 16th goal of the year.
Chris Allen and Marty Clapton added goals in the third period to help preserve the victory.
Florida forward Brent McDonald left the game in the second period after breaking his jaw when a puck hit him in the face. The loss is only the second lost at home all season for the Everblades. Maund stopped 22 of 28 shots. Daubenspeck stopped 37 of 38 shots. Florida finished 1 for 3 on the power play while South Carolina went 2 for 6.
The Everblades are back on the road tomorrow night as they take on the Pensacola Ice Pilots in Pensacola. Game time is 8:30 p.m. Florida will play five games in eight nights before returning home Tuesday January 13th to take on the Pensacola Ice Pilots at TECO Arena.
