Charlotte Checkers News Release

Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers home winning streak of four games was snapped by the Gwinnett Gladiators on Friday night by a score of 5-3.

After a scoreless first period, the home team would finally strike for the first tally of the contest. Charlotte forward Jeff Miles picked up the puck up on the Gwinnett blueline and skated in wristing a shot over the glove of goalie Kevin Nastiuk at 4:03. The Checkers extended their lead when defenseman Julien Brouillette found a loose puck near the crease and blasted it past a sprawling Nastiuk just 35 seconds later. Gwinnett would tie things up with a couple special-teams goals. The first came short-handed during a two-on-one rush. Gwinnett forward Adam Berti fed Adam Hobson for a one-timer over the glove of Checkers netminder Jeff Jakaitis at 6:26. Gwinnett would even up the contest during a power play when a point shot by defenseman Jean-Claude Sawyer was stopped by Jakaitis but the rebound bounced off a Checkers player and into the net at 17:31.

In the final stanza, the Gladiators achieved their first lead of the contest when forward Matt Siddall flipped a puck into the net. Although the puck didn't land on the ice, the referee indicated that the entire puck had traveled past the plain of the goal-line thus resulting in a goal for Gwinnett at 14:31. Charlotte would tie things up when Mike Bayrack fed Matthew Ford who scored on a blistering one-timer over the shoulder of Nastiuk at 15:58. Despite surrendering their first lead of the contest, the Gladiators were resilient and tallied two more goals to end the contest. Forward Travis Fuller knocked in a rebound past Jakaitis at 16:33 and Adam Berti scored on a breakaway at 18:13 as the Checkers skated away losing by a score of 5-3.
