Leggio's 3rd Shutout Leads Blades to 3rd Straight Win
January 9, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - Behind David Leggio's third shutout of the season, the Florida Everblades (22-8-2) cruised to their third straight win in a 3-0 performance over the Mississippi Sea Wolves (15-17-3) on Friday night at Germain Arena.
The win was Florida's fifth straight over the Sea Wolves this season and improved the Everblades all-time record over Mississippi to 28-7-1.
As they did in their previous two wins, a fast start was in order for the Everblades. Noah Babin and Kevin Baker staked the Everblades to a 2-0 lead by the end of the first period. With the pair of goals, Florida has scored eight first period goals in the past three games.
Babin opened the scoring with his first goal of the season just 3:11 into the contest. After a face-off win by Colin Nicholson, Matt Auffrey fed a pass to Babin at the right point. Babin's let a shot fly that ricocheted off traffic in front of the Mississippi net and past goaltender Ryan Munce.
As the period moved along the Everblades slowly began to take over control. The Everblades continually peppered the Sea Wolves net with shots, eventually finishing the period with a 23-11 advantage.
Florida increased their lead to two late in the frame on a power play goal by Baker. The league's leading scoring collected a rolling puck at the bottom of the left circle before wristing home a sharp-angle shot past a scrambling Munce with 2:03 left in the period. Ryan Lang and Aaron Brocklehurst collected the assists on Baker's league leading 14th power play goal of the year.
In the second period the Everblades picked up where they left off in the first period by applying steady pressure in the Mississippi end of the ice. Mark Lee then notched his second goal of the year at 6:55 of the frame with a quick shot from the inside of the left circle that beat Munce on the glove side. The goal came after a pair of chances from Auffrey and Brocklehurst who each tallied an assist on the goal.
Despite using their lone timeout of the game, the Sea Wolves couldn't muster any solid pressure as the Everblades limited Mississippi to just four shots in the middle period.
As the third period rolled into action, it was the Everblades penalty killing that took center stage. The Sea Wolves began the final period with 1:46 of power play time, but were limited to one shot. Shortly after Mississippi enjoyed a 5-on-3 power play, but again couldn't find any success. After killing off the three Mississippi power plays, the energized Everblades re-commanded the play eventually out-shooting the Sea Wolves 11-5.
Leggio moved into a first place tie in the league with his third shutout and his 20 saves gave the Everblades their sixth shutout overall on the season. The rookie net-minder improved his record to 11-3-1, and improved his personal record vs. Mississippi to 4-0-0. Munce suffered his third loss to the Everblades, but held his team in the game, fighting off 47 of 50 shots, but saw his record drop to 11-10-0.
On the power play, the Everblades finished the night 1-of-5, while Mississippi closed out the game 0-of-4.
