Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC -- Charleston's Estee Harris led off the fifth inning with a solo home run and the pitching staff limited Augusta to only five hits as the RiverDogs shutout the GreenJackets, 5-0, in South Atlantic League action Friday at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Charleston starter Chase Wright, who pitched six complete innings and allowed only four hits, picked up his fifth victory of the season as the RiverDogs, first-half champions of the Southern Division, balanced their second-half record to 2-2 (45-28 overall). Augusta, which finished second to the RiverDogs in the first half, lost for the first time in the season's second portion, dropping their record to 3-1 (43-28 overall).
Charleston took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Cody Ehlers singled to right center and drove home Tim Battle, who led off the frame when he was hit by a pitch thrown by GreenJackets starter Darren Sack, who suffered the loss that evened his overall mark to 4-4.
The RiverDogs scored another run in the third when Ehlers reached on a fielding error by Augusta first baseman Julian Benavidez that scored Ben Jones, who doubled to right center.
Charleston plated three more runs in the fifth inning, first on Harris' homer to dead center field, his eighth of the season. Four of Harris' eight homers have come against Augusta pitching. Mario Holmann drew a walk and scored when Battle doubled to center. After Marcos Vechionacci fanned, Jones singled to left center and Battle scored.
Of the RiverDogs' eight hits on the night, Jones and Ehlers, both of whom are heading for the SAL All-Star Game on Tuesday in Augusta, each recorded two hits.
Charleston middle-reliever Kevin Rival pitched the seventh and eighth innings, and allowed only one hit while striking out four. Mike Gardner pitched a perfect ninth inning and struck out one GreenJacket. It was the RiverDogs' fourth shutout win of the season.
No Augusta player recorded more than one hit.
Game Two of this three-game series is slated for Saturday at 7:05 p.m. as Mike Knox (0-0) makes his second RiverDogs appearance (first start) having just been sent to Charleston from Tampa. Brian Stirm (4-3) gets the call for Augusta.
