
Brandenburg promoted; Smolarski joins Grasshoppers

(GREENSBORO, NC) The Florida Marlins announced today that left-handed pitcher, Adam Brandenburg, has been promoted to High-A, Jupiter. In addition, the Grasshoppers have acquired catcher, Freddie Smolarski.
Brandenberg has been with the Grasshoppers since the start of the season. While with Greensboro, he has pitched 73.2 innings, struck out 49 and allowed 99 hits and five homeruns.
Brandenburg spent last season last season with the Marlins' rookie league Gulf Coast team and the low class-A Jamestown Jammers. With Jamestown, Brandenburg was 0-1 with an ERA of 0.00. He pitched five innings in which he struck out eight and allowed five hits. Brandenburg signed as a non-drafted free agent with the Florida Marlins on July 2004.
Right-handed pitcher Rick Vanden Hurk was recently promoted to class high-A Jupiter from the Grasshoppers. Unfortunately, during his first start, a line-drive struck his head and he suffered a mild concussion. He has since been placed on the diabled list for Jupiter.
Catcher Freddie Smolarski will join Luis Alen and Brad Davis as catchers for the Grasshoppers. Smolarski played in 56 games for the GCL in 2004 where he scored 29 runs with 54 hits and four homeruns. He has 28 RBI and 12 stolen bases.
The Grasshoppers travel to Kannapolis to face the Intimidators over the upcoming weekend. Upon their return, the Hoppers will enjoy the three-day All-Star Break, with the exception of Brett Carroll, Chris Mobley and Craig Molldrem who will be attending the honroable game over the three-day period. The next Grasshopper home game will take place on July 4 starting at 7:00 PM.
