Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Augusta, Ga. - The GreenJackets exploded for 18 hits in a 12-4 win over Rome, Thursday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The win gives them a sweep of Rome and a 3-0 record in the second half of the season. Once again, the GreenJackets got another solid start, this one from Caleb Salankey. Salankey pitched six innings of shutout ball and gave up only two hits, picking up his team leading seventh win. After Cole Armstrong doubled to right, Salankey retired the next 14 batters in a row.

The GreenJackets led off the first three innings with a double and put their first run on the board in the third. Alex Requena had his second of his three doubles tonight when he lined one to left center to lead off the third. After Marcus Sanders reached on an infield single, Carlos Sosa had his first RBI of the night when he drove in Requena. The GreenJackets added another run in the fourth when Lisandro Disla doubled in Nick Conte, who had his own double with two outs. The GreenJackets had nine doubles tonight.

In the sixth inning, Julian Benavidez singled to left with one out. Jason Columbus singled to center, advancing Benavidez to second. Conte had his second double of the night, when he blasted a high fastball to the left field wall, driving in Benavidez and Columbus. After Rome scored a run in the top of the seventh, the GreenJackets answered back with two of their own. Sanders singled to left and went to second on Sosa's single to center. Brian Horwitz singled to right, driving in Sanders from second and advancing Sosa to third. Horwitz went to second on a fielding error by right fielder Carl Loadenthal. After Simon Klink struck out, Benavidez had his first of three RBIs tonight when he hit a sacrifice fly to right, driving in Sosa.

All was well for the GreenJackets until the 8th. Trailing 6-1, Rome climbed back in the game in a hurry. Tim Alvarez relieved Doug Mackay and struck out Keith Eichas for the first out in the inning. Matt Young singled to center and advanced to second on a fielding error by Sanders off the bat of J.C. Holt. All-Star Michael Rozema doubled down the left field line, driving in Young. Ivan Terrazas hit a bloop single to right that drove in Holt. That was all for Alvarez when Craig Whitaker was called into the game by manager Roberto Kelly. Whitaker gave up a single to right from Loadenthal, driving in Rozema. At that point, Rome trailed 6-4. Whitaker settled down and struck out Armstrong and induced Dean White into a fielder's choice.

As the GreenJackets have done all season long, they answered back in the bottom of the inning. Disla grounded out to the pitcher to begin the bottom of the eighth off reliever Angelo Burrows. Requena had his third double of the night, this one a line drive down the line in right. After Sanders walked and Requena stole third, Sosa singled to right, driving in Requena. Horwitz doubled to left, driving in Sanders and moving Sosa to third. After Klink was intentionally walked, Benavidez made Rome pay with a double down the line in left. Sosa and Horwitz scored on the play and Klink went to third. A wild pitch ensued scoring Klink and advancing Benavidez. Benavidez came around to score when Jason Columbus drove him in with a line drive single up the middle.

Each GreenJackets starter had a hit and a run scored except for Lisandro Disla, who had an RBI double. The GreenJackets travel to Charleston for a three game series and return home for the All-Star break. GreenJackets pitcher Jonathan Sanchez will start the game for the Southern Division and Sanders, Horwitz and Wilson will also participate in the 46th annual midsummer classic.
