Charleston Burns Rome Again, 5-0, To Sweep Series

CHARLESTON, SC - Jimmy Paredes went 3-for-4 with a RBI and three stolen bases and Kelvin Perez penned 6.0 shutout innings, as the Charleston RiverDogs defeated the Rome Braves, 5-0 in South Atlantic League action early Tuesday in front of a crowd of 3,178 fans and school children at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Charleston completes its first four-game series sweep since Aug. 2008 and first home sweep since June 2008 in getting back to .500 overall at 10-10, while Rome has lost six games in a row and 13 of 15 setting its record at 7-12.

The RiverDogs roped a season-high six doubles as part of the 12-hit arsenal, stole a season-high five bases, but left a season-high 14 men on base in the victory. Rome failed to score against Charleston in the final 19 innings of the series and in 29 of the final 30 innings overall.

For the seventh time in as many games, the RiverDogs scored first against Rome starter David Hale (0-3) taking a 1-0 lead on a RBI groundout from Paredes.

The lead grew to 2-0 in the fourth on DeAngelo Mack's two-out RBI single to right field.

Hale was removed after 4.0 innings allowing five hits while walking a season-high five and striking out three.

Francisco Arcia singled home a run in the fifth for a 3-0 advantage, while Rob Lyerly's RBI groundout in the sixth moved the score to 4-0, as Charleston plated runs in four straight innings.

Luke Murton concluded the afternoon's scoring on an eighth-inning RBI single. The former Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket also increased his hitting streak to 14 games in the process going 2-for-4 with the RBI.

Perez (2-0) was solid over 6.0 innings giving up just four Rome hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Ben Watkins and Ryan Flannery combined to one-hit Rome over the final three innings and finish off consecutive shutout performances.

Zoilo Almonte contributed a pair of doubles and two runs for the RiverDogs, while Arcia went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored.

The second four-game series of the homestand begins tomorrow night at 7:05 as the RiverDogs welcome the Hickory Crawdads to town. Charleston sends southpaw Shaeffer Hall (1-0, 0.71) to the mound to face right-hander Joe Wieland (0-2, 1.93) for Augusta.
