Suns Shutout Shorebirds 5-0

After an intense pitching duel for over seven innings, the Suns broke through and put together a five-run eighth for a 5-0 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds on Tuesday for a two-hit shutout.

Jack McGeary took the start for the Suns and pitched seven innings, striking out three and allowing just two hits. He left with a no decision after departing after seven with a 0-0 tie.

His counterpart, Delmarva's Jesse Beal (1-2), also pitched seven shutout innings into the eighth. He had allowed just one hit and struck out five in those seven innings.

In the eighth, Destin Hood led off with a double to left off Beal. Designated hitter J.P. Ramirez broke the stalemate on the next at bat with a ground ball single to center to score Hood for a 1-0 lead. After Marcus Jones doubled to put runners on second and third, Sandy Leon hit a shot fly ball single to score Ramirez. On the next batter, Eury Perez grounded into a fielder's choice to score Jones. Beal left the game with the Suns up 3-0.

Two batters later with the bases loaded, shortstop Sean Nicol singled up the middle off Bobby Bundy to score Leon and Perez for a 5-0 lead.

Wanel Vasquez (1-0) earned the win after coming in for the eighth inning and finishing the game. He ended with two innings with no hits and a strikeout.

Beal ended with seven innings and five runs charged to him. Bundy pitched through the eighth, allowing just one hit.

This is the second shutout by Hagerstown. The first came on April 8th in a 1-0 five-and-a-half inning game against the Hickory Crawdads.

Hagerstown takes the series 2-1 and improves to 10-9 on the season. Delmarva falls to 10-9.

The Suns will begin a four-game set against the Augusta GreenJackets on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. Gates to Municipal Stadium will open at 5:35 p.m.
