Hickory Crawdads News Release
SAVANNAH, GA - The Hickory Crawdads earned the series split with their second straight win, 4-3, against the Savannah Sand Gnats before 928 fans at Historic Grayson Stadium in Savannah on Tuesday night. CF Miguel Velazquez collected three hits and drove in all four RBIs, just missing the cycle by a triple.
The Sand Gnats (12-8) struck for a pair of first-inning runs on a two-run homer by LF Juan Legares against RHP Neil Ramirez (2-1) to take an early 2-0 lead. Ramirez got out of the inning and only gave up one more run on just one more hit while striking out five over the next four innings.
The Crawdads (10-10) came right back on a two-run homer hit by Velazquez off Savannah starter LHP Darin Gorski (1-1) in the top of the third. Velazquez struck again with a two-out, two-run double in the top of the fifth, bringing in 2B Edwin Garcia and SS Leury Garcia from second and first, respectively, to lift Hickory into the 4-2 lead.
Savannah inched closer with a run in the fifth against Ramirez, but the Crawdads bullpen shut down the Sand Gnats bats the rest of the way. LHP Robbie Erlin struck out four through three scoreless frames and RHP Josh Lueke struck out two in a shutout ninth to close out the Crawdads 4-3 win.
Ramirez earned the win and Lueke registered his league leading sixth save for Hickory, while Gorski was tagged with the loss for Savannah.
