Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Asheville, NC - Held to just one hit through the first five innings, the Augusta GreenJackets trailed early and never saw light in an 8-0 whitewashing at the hands of the Asheville Tourists on Tuesday afternoon.
BJ Salsbury (2-2) allowed two home runs in the first inning for the second time this season. The three-run shot by Jared Clark was followed four hitters later by a Nathan Hines two-run blast to put the Tourists up 5-0. In the fifth, Salsbury allowed a walk and back-to-back singles before departing the game after a rain delay. With Chris Gloor on the mound, Hines brought in another run on a sacrifice fly.
The game was twice delayed by rain, as it started 30 minutes late and was halted again in the third inning for 45 minutes.
Salsbury fired two innings and allowed six runs on seven hits with three walks and a strikeout in his shortest outing of the season.
Asheville starter Juan Gonzalez came back following the rain delay to last five innings and was untouchable to GreenJackets hitters. Gonzalez (1-0) threw five scoreless innings of one-hit ball, walking four and striking out three.
The Tourists added a pair of runs off Brian Irving in the sixth and eighth respectively on an RBI single and fielder's choice, each from the bat of Angelys Nina.
Augusta hitters went 0-9 at the plate with runners in scoring position and stranded nine men on base. Six of those men were stranded in the final five innings. The GreenJackets also hit into two double plays.
The GreenJackets continue their road trip in Hagerstown with Zack Wheeler on the mound in the opener Wednesday night against Paul Demny of the Suns. First pitch will come at 6:35 p.m. in Hagerstown with the pregame action beginning at 6:20 p.m. on www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
Single-game and Season Tickets are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
