Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

Savannah, GA - The Hickory Crawdads (10-10) overcame an early 2-0 Savannah lead to defeat the Sand Gnats 4-3 Tuesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium.

The Gnats (12-8) scored first in the bottom of the first inning. Centerfielder Pedro Zapata drew a leadoff walk, and left fielder Juan Lagares followed by clubbing the first pitch he saw over the left field wall for his third home run of the year, to put Savannah ahead 2-0.

Gnats starter Darin Gorski could not hold the lead in large part because he could not contain Crawdads' centerfielder Miguel Velazquez. In the third inning, Velazquez drilled a two run home run off the light tower in left field to tie the game at 2-2. Velazquez hit the same pole with a home run in Sunday's game. In the fifth inning, with two on and two out, Velazquez roped a double straight away to centerfield over Zapata's head to drive home two runs and give the Crawdads a 4-2 lead.

Savannah got a run back in the bottom of the fifth when RF Cesar Puello doubled down the left field line and scored on a sacrifice fly from 2B Alonzo Harris. The Gnats had a chance in the ninth, but stranded the tying run at second base.

RHP Taylor Whitenton's relief work was a bright spot for the Gnats on Tuesday. Whitenton was a hit batter away from perfection in four innings with five strikeouts.

The Gnats begin a four-game series with the Lexington Legends Wednesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium when the Gnats' RHP Armando Rodriguez (0-3, 5.03) takes on RHP Tanner Bushue (1-0, 3.20) and the Legends at 7:05 pm. The Gnats pregame show on News/Talk 630 WBMQ and online at www.sandgnats.com begins at 6:50.
