Cephas Howard to DL; Sammy Leon returns to Cedar Rapids

July 2, 2008 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announce today that RHP Cephas Howard has been placed on the disabled list, retroactive to June 30, with a right rotator strain and that RHP Sammy Leon has been assigned to Cedar Rapids from Rancho Cucamonga.

Howard appeared in six games for the Kernels with a 0-1 record and 3.24 ERA. In 8.1 IP, he allowed three runs on six hits, walked four and struck out eight.

Leon was assigned to Rancho Cucamonga on April 28. In 15 games with the Quakes, he had a 1-2 record and 7.97 ERA with two starts and one save. In 20.1 IP, he allowed 22 runs (18 earned) on 29 hits, walked 18 and struck out 23.

Leon will join the team in Davenport and be available for tonight's 7 pm game with the Quad Cities River Bandits. With today's transactions, the Kernels roster stands at 25 active players with four players on the disabled list.

The Kernels are in the midst of a four game commuter series with Quad Cities. They return home to Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, July 5 and open a three game series with the Kane County Cougars.
