Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Peoria Chiefs jumped to another early lead and kept adding on to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 8-4 Wednesday afternoon on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Marquez Smith continued his hot hitting against Wisconsin as Peoria won its ninth straight game.

Smith gave Peoria (9-5 second half, 39-43 overall) a 3-0 lead three batters into the game. He crushed a three-run homer to left off Rattler starting pitcher Juan Ramirez. Smith has hit four homers and driven in eight runs in ten games against the Timber Rattlers this season.

Wisconsin (3-11, 34-46) got two runs back in the bottom of the first. Edilio Colina knocked in the first run with an RBI grounder. Later in the frame, Alex Liddi drove in a run with a double, but he was out trying to stretch the hit into a triple.

Peoria scored in the third inning on an RBI double by Jovan Rosa. In the fourth, Drew Rundle lined a two-run homer to right and the Chiefs went up 6-2. That marked the end of the day for Ramirez. The Rattler starter allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits over four innings and took his seventh loss of the season.

In the seventh inning, Peoria added another run with an RBI double by Brandon Guyer. The Chiefs tacked on one more run in the top of the ninth on another RBI double by Guyer.

The Peoria bullpen made the lead stand up for Hernandez after he left the game. Hernandez picked up his first win of the season as he tossed five innings, allowed five hits, and struck out five. The only runs Wisconsin got in four innings against the Peoria pen was a two-out, two-run triple by Denny Almonte in the bottom of the ninth to account for the final score.

The loss was the sixth straight for the Rattlers.

Game three of the series is Thursday night. Jake Wild (3-3, 3.21) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Jay Jackson, the 9th round pick of the Chicago Cubs in the 2008 draft, makes his Midwest League debut for the Chiefs. Game time is 7:05pm.
