Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA - The Kane County Cougars have designated the Wednesday, July 16 game as its 2nd annual Peanut-Free Night presented by Enjoy Life Foods. The 6:30 p.m. contest between the Cougars and Great Lakes Loons will be free of any peanuts or peanut ingredients at Elfstrom Stadium as the organization hopes to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for Chicago-area families of children with peanut allergies. There will be no sales of peanuts or peanut-related products throughout the entire ballpark as all concession stands, stadium seating bowl and grounds will be cleared to make the evening as safe as possible for fans. Additionally, players of both teams will abstain from using foods containing peanuts or peanut ingredients. The Cougars are the only team in the Chicagoland area that offers a Peanut-Free Night that families can attend.
Peanut and tree nut allergies affect approximately three million Americans including 1 out of 17 children under 3 years of age, and are the leading cause of food allergic reactions. Food allergy reactions in children can range from mild symptoms such as skin rashes to anaphylaxis, a sudden and severe response that can end in death. Currently, there are no medications that cure food allergies.
In addition to safely enjoying a Cougars game, fans will take in a post-game fireworks show choreographed to â80's music and have a chance to go on the field and run the bases after the game.
"Months after last year's inaugural Peanut-Free Night, we continued to receive thank-you emails and phone calls from families who were able to safely attend a baseball game for the first time," Cougars General Manager Jeff Sedivy said. "Food allergies should never prevent a family from enjoying a night at a Cougars game, and it is through events such as this where the Cougars can help create awareness for an important cause that affects many families in the Chicago area."
Ever since the organization's inception in 1991, the Kane County Cougars have been at the forefront of affordable and family-friendly fun. Nearly 100 former Cougars players have played at the Major League level, including Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster, Miguel Cabrera and Josh Beckett. The Cougars are the only Major League-affiliated baseball team in the Chicagoland area.
Tickets for the Peanut-Free Night presented by Enjoy Life Foods on July 16 can be ordered by calling the Cougars at (630) 232-8811 or visiting www.kccougars.com. That evening, gates to the ballpark will open at 4:30 p.m. and first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
