Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Dayton, OH - Seven first-inning Cedar Rapids runs gives the Kernels the early lead they would not lose in a 16-7 rain-shortened victory in the series finale against Dayton Sunday afternoon.
After a 2:44 rain delay, the Kernels' bats came out hot in the top of the first inning. Tanner Schobel led off the game with a single, and after an Emmanuel Rodriguez flyout, Ben Ross singled to put runners on the corners with no outs. Kala'i Rosario then reached on an error scoring a run to put the Kernels on the board at 1-0. The next batter Noah Cardenas then drove home a run with a double, and Misael Urbina picked up an RBI with a groundout. A walk and an error produced another run, then Kyler Fedko made it 5-0 with an RBI single, sending it back to the top of the order where Schobel picked up his second hit of the inning, this time an RBI single to make it 6-0. With runs again on the corners, an error scored Fedko to make it 7-0 after a half inning.
In the bottom of the first, a leadoff double and a hit by pitch put two runners on for Dayton with no one out. After a strikeout, Justice Thompson smashed a three-run home run to make it a 7-3 game after one.
The score remained 7-3 until the top of the third. Fedko lead off the inning with a walk, then Rodriguez replaced him on base with a fielder's choice in front of Ben Ross, who roped a two-run home run reopening the Cedar Rapids lead to 9-3. ‰ ‰ ‰ ‰ ‰
Dayton countered back with a run bottom of the third thanks to two errors to set the score at 9-4 headed to the fourth. In the top of the fourth, a Noah Cardenas double put a runner in scoring position for Jose Salas, who dropped in an RBI hit to extend the Kernels' lead back up to six.
In the top of the fifth, Rosario followed up a Rodriguez single with his tenth home run of the season, a two-run shot to left extending the Kernels' lead to 12-4.
After the Dragons scored single runs in both the bottom of the fifth and the bottom of the sixth, the Kernels struck again in the seventh. A Schobel walk and a Rodriguez single put two runners on for Rosario, who again delivered an RBI with a base hit, making it a 13-6 Cedar Rapids edge.
In the bottom of the seventh, Dayton scored a run on a wild pitch to draw one run closer before the Kernels tacked on in the top of the eighth. A single and an error put two on for Rodriguez, who scored a run with a ground-rule double. Ross then picked up his third hit of the day with an RBI single, and the next batter, Rosario, also picked up a single to earn his fourth RBI of the day, setting the tally at 16-7, the score which would be the final with no ninth inning played due to rain.
The win for the Kernels (32-25) ensures a split of the six-game series against Dayton (29-28) and a 7-5 twelve-game road trip. With just nine games left in the first half of the season, Cedar Rapids opens up a twelve-game home stand starting with six contests against South Bend Tuesday at 6:35.
