Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio - The Cedar Rapids Kernels collected 19 hits on the way to a 16-7 win over the Dayton Dragons on Sunday afternoon in a game shortened by rain to eight innings. The start of the game was delayed by rain for two hours, 44 minutes, and the game was called after a 30-minute rain delay in the top of the ninth inning. The Dragons and Kernels split a six-game series. The Dragons are 12-5 over their last 17 games.
A crowd of 7,529 was in attendance at Day Air Ballpark in the heart of the Water Street District.
After a lengthy delay at the start, the first pitch was thrown at 3:54 p.m., and the Kernels opened the game by scoring seven runs in the top of the first inning. The Dragons responded in the bottom of the first when Justice Thompson lined a three-run home run off the left field foul pole to make it 7-3.
But the Dragons could not close the deficit. Cedar Rapids scored two runs in the third inning and added runs in the fourth, fifth, seventh, and eighth innings.
The Dragons collected nine hits, led by Thompson, who was 3 for 4 with the home run and two singles. Edwin Arroyo added three hits to extend his hitting streak to 11 straight games, the longest of the year for a Dayton player. Arroyo had two singles and a double. Dayton's Luis Chevalier hit a solo home run in the sixth inning, his first of the season.
Dragons starting pitcher Thomas Farr (1-3) was charged with the loss. He lasted just two-thirds of an inning, allowing six runs (only one earned) on three hits with one walk and no strikeouts.
The Dragons committed a season-high four errors including three in the first inning. Seven of the 16 runs scored by Cedar Rapids were unearned.
