Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

TROY, NY - On a night featuring postgame fireworks, the Tri-City ValleyCats offense set off plenty of fireworks of their own during the game, hitting four homers, and tying their season-high in runs scored, en route to a 13-4 victory over the Brooklyn Cyclones, in front of a sell-out crowd of 5,508 fans at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium, on Sunday night.

Johnny Sewald got Tri-City on the scoreboard early by leading off the bottom of the first inning with a single, before stealing second base, advancing to third on an error, and scoring on an RBI groundout by Hector Roa.

The 'Cats bats really began to really pick it up in the bottom of the second, when Cesar Carrasco drove home Dexture McCall with a two-run home run over the left field wall. One inning later, Aaron Mizell added a home run of his own, making the score 4-0 in favor of Tri-City.

The Cyclones did put up some offense in the top of the fourth, pushing a run across on an RBI double by third baseman David Thompson, before tying the game at 4-4, with a three-run home run by first baseman Zach Mathieu.

The score did not stay tied for long, however, as Anthony Hermelyn and Roa each hit two-run home runs in the bottom of the fourth, to put Tri-City ahead 8-4.

Two innings later, the ValleyCats scored four runs once more, as Roa, Bobby Wernes, Kolbey Carpenter, and Brooks Marlow all added RBI's.

Wrapping up the RBI's for the evening was McCall, who brought home Pat Porter with a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth.

Getting the start for Tri-City was left-hander Zac Person, who struck out a career-high six batters in 3.1 innings pitched. He was followed by right-hander Kevin McCanna, who earned the win by allowing only two hits, and striking out one batter in 3.2 frames. Finishing out the game for the 'Cats was fellow righty Ralph Garza, who struck out two batters in two scoreless innings.

At the plate, all nine offensive starters for the 'Cats had at least one base hit, while eight had at least one run batted in. Roa finished 2-for-4 with the home run, and four runs batted in, while Sewald (2-for-4, two runs scored, and one stolen base) Mizell (2-for-5, one home run and two runs scored), McCall (2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and one run batted in) and Carrasco (2-for-4 with a home run, a double, and two runs batted in) also posted multi-hit games.

Tri-City will look to carry their offensive momentum into Monday's 7 p.m., contest against Brooklyn, which will be the second game in a three-game set. On the mound for the ValleyCats will be RHP Trent Thornton (4-0, 3.19), with RHP Gaby Almonte getting the start for the Cyclones.
