Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (31-33) dropped the first game of a three game series with the Staten Island Yankees (35-32) by a score of 10-2 on Sunday evening. In the game Staten Island tallied 15 hits and every starter had at least one.
Chase Edwards (6-6) found himself down 4-0 after two innings and the struggles continued in the third. First basemen Ryan Krill (2-4, 2 R, RBI) started the inning with a double, then with one-out designated hitter Brandon Wagner (1-3, RBI) walked to put two men on. The next three batters all drove in runs for the Yankees. Catcher Jake Hernandez (1-4, R, RBI) singled in a run and so did third basemen Drew Bridges (2-4, 2 R, RBI). The knockout punch came when shortstop Danienger Perez (3-4, 2B, 3B, 2 R, 3 RBI) who was making his NYPL debut tripled home two more runs to make it 9-0.
Edwards ended up lasting just two and a third for Connecticut as he allowed 11 hits and nine runs. He struck out two and walked two. Jordan Smith pitched extremely well in relief and was a bright spot for Connecticut as he tossed four and third shutout innings. Smith gave up just two hits and he struck out one. Andres Tejada worked the final inning giving up a run.
Ethan Carnes (2-0) was fantastic for Staten Island. He retired the first 11 batters of the game and ended up pitching six innings of shutout baseball giving up three hits and striking out three. James Reeves (SV 2) worked the final three innings and allowed two runs.
Both Connecticut runs scored on a home run from designated hitter Shane Zeile in the seventh. It was Zeile's sixth homer of the year and it ties him for the team lead with Cam Gibson.
Connecticut will play the second game of a three game series at Staten Island on Monday. The first pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
