Scrappers Split Double Dip

A 2-4 road trip, and then 1:30 a.m. arrival in Niles. What would be next?

A doubleheader against State College at home. The Scrappers went into the doubleheader on Sunday and won the first game 12-5, and lost the second 4-3 at Eastwood Field.

Mahoning Valley was 12-19 at home entering the doubleheader, and 0-5 against State College this season. The Scrappers averaged one and a half runs against the Spikes this season going into Sunday's games.

The Scrappers put up 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning of the first game.

The Spikes got to Jared Robinson early on. Casey Grayson doubled to score Mike Pritchard, and then Orlando Olivera hit a two-run home run to left to give the Spikes a 3-0 lead.

Mahoning Valley had something up its sleeve.

Gabriel Mejia reached on a single, and Ka'ai Tom hit a double to left. The double extended his hit streak to 13 games. Mark Mathias then slapped a single to left to score Mejia and Tom. Just like that, the Scrappers were within one.

Daniel Salters reached on a single. Connor Marabell reached on a fielder's choice to score Mathias. Juan De La Cruz smashed a double to right center to score Marabell. Then Alexis Pantoja doubled to right to score De La Cruz and Austin Fisher (walk).

The Scrappers batted around in the bottom of the first.

Mejia reached on another single, and Tom doubled again. Tom finished with three doubles in the game. Salter smashed a double to right to score Tom and Mathias.

The Spikes added two runs on a two-run home run for Casey Grayson, which was his second of the season.

Jared Robinson earned the win after tossing six innings, despite allowing five earned runs on six hits. Jacob Evans took the loss for the Spikes. He had entered with a 1.05 ERA, and after allowing 10 earned runs on eight hits in two-thirds of an inning, his ERA rests at a 3.09.

The Spikes won the second game 4-3.

Thomas Spitz grounded out to second to score Champ Rowland in the top of the third. The Scrappers responded with an RBI single for Willi Castro to score Mejia.

Mahoning Valley got two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run double for Austin Fisher to score Jodd Carter and Mathias. The Spikes got to Yoiber Marquina in the seventh.

Mike Pritchard hit a two-run single to score Michael Massi and Craig Aikin.

Christian Meister did not earn a decision in his first outing with the Scrappers. He went four innings and gave up two earned runs on two hits.

After splitting the doubleheader, the Scrappers send Kieran Lovegrove to the mound on Monday night against Jorge Rodriguez for the Spikes. First pitch at Eastwood Field is set for 7:05.
