TROY, NY (August 30, 2015) -- Cyclones starter Kevin Canelon (5-5), who had allowed just five home runs in 243.2 career innings coming into this evening, allowed four home runs in 4.0 innings as the ValleyCats defeated the Cyclones 13-4 on Sunday evening at Bruno Stadium. Offensively, Zach Mathieu was the lone bright spot with a 2-for-4 effort, including a home run and three RBI. The slugging first baseman now has 16 RBI in his last 16 games.

Johnny Sewald led off the bottom of the first with a single before stealing second and advancing to third on a missed catch error by Vinny Siena, to put a runner on third with nobody out. Valley Cats rightfielder Hector Roa then grounded out to shortstop, but Sewald came home on the fielder's choice to open the scoring.

In the bottom of the second Tri-City added to their lead after Dexture McCall doubled to start the frame and Cesar Carrasco sent him home with a two-run home run to make it 3-0. The ValleyCats pushed the lead to 4-0 an inning later, once again courtesy of the long ball, as Aaron Mizell drilled a 2-2 offering from Kevin Canelon over the left field wall.

Brooklyn mounted their lone offensive rally of the game in the top of the fourth and clawed back into the game. Alfredo Reyes led of the inning with a single to right and advance to second on a ground out from Vinny Siena. David Thompson took advantage of the scoring opportunity with an RBI double to center field that trimmed the lead to 4-1. Jeff Diehl followed with a line drive single that put runners on the corners and chased Tri-City starter Zac Person from the game. Kevin McCanna was the first reliever out of the pen for the ValleyCats, and was greeted rudely by Zach Mathieu. The Cyclones first baseman continued his recent hot hitting with an opposite field three-run home run that knotted the score at 4-4.

But in the bottom of the frame, Tri-City regained the lead and took control of the game. McCall singled to start the frame and circled the bases when Anthony Hermelyn hit a two-run home run that made it 6-4. But the 'Cats weren't done. Brooks Marlow had a one out-single before Hector Road connected on his fifth home run of the season to make it 8-4 at the end of four innings.

After a scoreless fifth inning, Tri-City tacked on four more runs off of Brooklyn reliever Brandon Welch in the bottom of the sixth to push their advantage to 12-4. That's how it would stay until the bottom of the eighth when there would be fireworks, not supplied by the ValleyCats bats.

With Ruben Reyes on the mound for the Cyclones, the lefthander recorded the first out of the inning when Alexander Melendez flied out to center. Hector Roa, who had hit a home run earlier in the game and took his time circling the bases, was drilled by a 1-1 offering from Reyes which led to both benches clearing and the ejection of three players. When order was restored, Pedro Perez was summoned from left field to make his fourth relief outing of the season. Tri-City would add an unearned run later in the frame to make the final score 13-4.

With the loss , Brooklyn dropped to 31-36 on the season and fell 4.0 games behind in the race for the McNamara Division with just nine games remaining. RHP Gaby Almonte(6-5) will take the mound for Brooklyn on Monday night in the middle game of the three-game set with the ValleyCats. The Cyclones have never finished below .500 in franchise history and are just three losses away from the first losing season in franchise history.
