Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners battled all night, but a five-run 11th inning from the Hudson Valley was one battle too many as the Spinners started their three-game homestand with a 10-5 defeat Sunday evening at LeLacheur Park.
The loss, coupled by wins by the other playoff contenders, made the path to the playoffs exceedingly more difficult for the Spinners.
Hudson Valley (35-32) got three runs in the third after a pair of quick outs to take a 3-0 lead. A hit-batter and walk put two on, with a run coming in after Joe McCarthy stole third and Jhon Nunez's throw ended up in shallow right field. Alex Schmidt followed with a two-run home run to give the Renegades a 3-0 lead.
The Spinners got a pair back in the bottom half of the inning. Following a one-out double by Jeremy Rivera, Tyler Spoon's first professional home run put Lowell within a run at 3-2.
After the Renegades added a run in the fourth, Lowell responded with a run of their own in the fifth after a lead off walk by Nunez. Nunez moved to second on an error by Joseph Astacio, third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch to make it a 4-3 game.
The Renegades once again extended the lead in the sixth before the Spinners again responded, tying things up in the seventh on a two-run double down the line from Spoon.
The score remained there until the top of the 11th when the Renegades put the first two men on and a Michael Russell gave Hudson Valley at 6-5 lead. The Renegades would continue to add on from there, scoring two on a bases loaded double by Angel Moreno, another pair on fielder's choices to carry a 10-5 lead into the bottom half of the inning.
Lowell (34-34) couldn't muster anything in the bottom half as they went down in order.
Spoon led the offense for the Spinners, driving in four, including his first professional home run. Rivera added three hits while Tucker Tubbs had a pair.
Kevin Steen started for the Spinners, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks over 3.1 innings. He struck out two. Danny Zandona was charged with one run in 2.2 innings, striking out one. Trevor Kelley followed with three scoreless, allowing a pair of hits while striking out two. Enfember Martinez (3-3, 3.60) was charged with the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits and a walk. He struck out two.
The Spinners will look to get one back Monday night on Hunger Games Night at LeLacheur Park. Javier Rodriguez (0-4, 6.06) is on the mound for the 7:05 first pitch.
