-SPIKES HEAD TO MAHONING VALLEY FOR CRUCIAL SERIES: The State College Spikes, who are now tied for second in the New York-Penn League Wild Card race 1 1/2 games back of West Virginia , continue their 10th Season this afternoon with a doubleheader against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers at Eastwood Field. State College has a chance to jump back into a tie for the Wild Card lead with a pair of victories today. The Spikes shut out the Scrappers in back-to-back games on June 26-27 at Eastwood Field, and have won all five meetings against Mahoning Valley this year. All-time, the Spikes are 50-45 against the Scrappers, with a 19-28 mark in games played in Ohio.
-LAST GAME: Mike Pritchard invigorated the Spikes' offense early, and the pitching staff held the Auburn Doubledays at bay throughout the late innings, but a ninth-inning burst enabled the Doubledays to take a 3-1 decision on Saturday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Pritchard's stand-up triple in the first inning, followed by Leobaldo Pina's RBI groundout, tied the game at 1-1. The stalemate would last until the ninth inning despite quality scoring opportunites on both sides. Auburn would leave eight runners on base from the sixth through the eighth, while State College stranded six runners over the same span. Doubledays outfielder Rhett Wiseman then delivered his third hit of the night, a two-run single with the bases loaded in the ninth, to break the tie and complete the scoring. Wiseman reached base a total of five times on the night, with two walks also on his record. Pritchard and Casey Grayson each posted multi-hit games for the Spikes.
-SPIKES' EVANS, CROSS FORM TANDEM TODAY: State College sends a pair of 2015 MLB Draft picks to the mound for today's doubleheader, as left-hander Jacob Evans gets the ball for the opener and right-hander Carson Cross starts the second game. Evans, the Cardinals' sixth-round draft choice out of Oklahoma, has gone 2-1 with a 0.82 ERA in four starts this season after spending the first half of the year in the bullpen. Cross, the Cardinals' 14th-round draft choice out of UConn, has posted three quality starts of six innings or more with three earned runs or less in his last four outings.
-ROBINSON, MEISTER ON HILL FOR SCRAPPERS: Mahoning Valley right-hander Jared Robinson will make his 13th start of the season today as he starts the first game for the Scrappers. Robinson, the 11th-round draft choice of the Indians in 2014, is working on a scoreless streak of 24 2/3 innings over his last four starts. The Scrappers will start new addition Christian Meister on the hill for the second game of the day. Meister, who was called up from the Arizona League Indians today, was drafted by the Indians in the 29th round this year. The righty went 2-1 with a 0.98 ERA in eight AZL outings.
-MARTIN EARNS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD: Spikes Athletic Trainer Dan Martin has been named the New York-Penn League Athletic Trainer of the Year by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS). The award is given annually to one member of each of the 16 leagues in Minor League Baseball, as well as one award for the Dominican Summer League, with an additional award is given to the Minor League Coordinator of the Year. Martin is now eligible for the Minor League Trainer of the Year award as well, which will be given at the 2015 Winter Meetings in Nashville, TN.
-GRAYSON GOING BACK TO THE TOP: Spikes infielder Casey Grayson hit his first homer of the season on Wednesday, three days after notching his first triple of the year. Grayson, who is tied for the team lead in doubles with 15, is now fourth in the New York-Penn League in batting average with a .316 mark, and his .422 on-base percentage is second in the league. Grayson is also second in the NYPL with 68 hits, and is second in the loop with 40 walks.
